Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

When does your manager know

They say before a big layoff there is a list… is your manager told ahead of time? Maybe it depends on the level, but when they say they don’t know anything are they telling the truth?

I have been retired from BNY for 8 months now. I asked to be put on the "layoff" list, and I told I was added. Two "large" layoffs came and went, and I was still employed waiting for layoff as I was ready to go (retirement age). I bit the bullet and just retired on my own. I guess it could have happened at some point in time, and yes, I gave up sub benefits that would have been quite extensive (my assumption in how many years I had with the firm), but I was more than ready to go and there was never a guarantee that I would be laid off.

So if I was told I was added to the list, they kept deferring the date for whatever reason.

I'm a tech manager, don't want to say what level, but high enough to know how it works.
HR doesn't want to hear this, although they know it goes on. I ask people I think that are close to retirement if they want to be on the list. Most of the people I've layed off have 'volunteered' to be on the list. I'd say less than 20% of the people I've let go didn't volunteer and had no idea they were being let go. Which is ironic because those are the ones that should have been the most concerned.
The thing now is to try and get rid of people for cause(i.e. not being in the office). If you are below/does not meet/whatever they call it this month, for 2 periods in a row you're gone. It doesn't matter if you have a 'plan' or not. If you are on an PIP you're gone, there is no coming back from that, it's all a show.

My immediate manager didn't know until two weeks prior but my documentation from BNY all said the determination was made in June (I was laid off in early September). So some management knew, just not sure who.

Directors and above know 2+- months in advance. In our area the Directors provide lists to MDs for approval. Occasionally MDs change the list, and very rarely HR does if there's too many protected classes on the list.

Managers do know. My question is who decides who gets laid off? At what level does this happen?

your COO will likely be one of the first to find out and ask the MDs/SDs for names/targets and it will trickle down. this is usually 2 months ahead of time.

Depends on the level of the manager. Those working directly with staff get told the day it happens. The hire ups know months in advance.

Yes, managers are informed months in advance of who is being let go. Any manager who denies this, is just trying to save face.

My manager had no idea when I was going to be laid off. She knew her staff would be hit in November but was never told who. It actually happened at the end of October which wasn’t expected. So I honestly think the managers are telling the truth, whether or not you believe them.
