Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Is the job market really that bad?

Is it the market or is it just me? I’ve been trying to find another job for almost six months now. My resume is fine, above average even. I’m in my early 40s - can that be the reason? It’s been really bothering me that I can’t find anything decent, and have made me even more worried about my future here.

I had some difficulties as well. It depends on you skills and background. Prior to leaving, people said, you will have no problems finding a new job, because of your 28 years with VZ. Some large companies do not want anyone that has been with a large company for 28 years. Many smaller companies pass over your resume, since they automatically assume that they are unable to pay your salary.
Take the short term and contract jobs while continuing the search. I also found that being a white male being interviewed by females from India is not good. I had 3 different companies where each o the females pulled by resume for an interview. No interview lasted over 12 minutes. As soon as they viewed my face via video seeing that I am an old white dude, it was all over.

My last day on payroll was October 25. I had 3 job offers within a month. I started my new job on December 2, which was a slight pay increase over VZW.

OP, are your using AI such as ChatGPT to help with your resume? I used it to create a custom resume and cover letter tailored to each job I applied to.

Look up 'ghost jobs' That will make it more clear. there is a reason for everything. just only some can figure out what to do... you can look into the past too.... I mean like over 800 years ago. they had the same problems and figured out what to do.

@2vkg

Taking a 20+% pay cut and “getting to” travel internationally don’t belong in the same sentence. It just sounds like you were down leveled by this new employer and the position is being backfilled by a lower level employee. Which, ironically, is what Verizon will do for your old job, too. Move your feet, lose your seat.

The job market is only bad if you possess skills the market doesn’t need or you have skills that are cursory that everyone else also possesses. I’m 65, left in September and will be back to work in January. Did I see age discrimination- yes I did, but I also ran through multiple interview cycles before an offer came through. Person(s) with quantifiable technical skills will always be in demand in and outside of corporate America. BTW, new role entails a 25% pay cut but interesting overseas travel, which is a welcome change over VZ BS of d-mb trainings, stupid meetings and never ending check the box tasks that didn’t help me, the customer or Verizon. The only thing I miss since leaving is the pay check.

I was laid off the week before they announced the VSP.. last day on payroll was June 29. I've been looking for a job since May 30. Was a software engineer working in Network Systems within VGS. I've had 3 interviews since june.. out of over 200 applications so far.. 3... I'm absolutely petrified that my family of 4, including 2 young children, are going to be out of a home here soon if something doesn't break soon.

@zsz+1wd5OMum, it is not a crushing reality for a lot of VSPers, I am one. I do not know what position the OP is looking for however there's private sector, government, education and remote jobs to train AI. It's not all doom and gloom, or negative. Some have had to take a 20+30% pay cut but great benefits, work life balance and peace of mind. Best decision for me. Not the stress I had before.

It would be helpful to state what type of job you are looking for.

The market is that bad. It's been a crushing reality for those that took VSP in a state of complete and utter burnout. Constant back to back meetings, high pressure, and never ending reorg chaos is certainly better than no job at all or a step backward.
