“Neighborhood” a.k.a, Open Seating

The open seating policy needs to follow DEI and simply evaporate as another failed experiment.
Open seating, where you play musical chairs each morning, has no dedicated work seating area for the employee and are not allowed to have any personal items on your desk etc does not foster a sense of belonging, commitment, dedication or loyalty to the position. It is so impersonal. The employee feels they are nothing more than a rolling stone who not be missed when they are laid off. No sense of pride or accomplishment in this Gulag.

@phy+1wfnyhTe Before covid shutdowns, they went to flex seating in my building. If you badged in half the month on average, you got a fixed permanent desk. All others had open seating. I played the game and went in for 3 days and left early most days but most of team was remote.

I agree that the unassigned seating su-ks, you got to move your personal belongings in your locked cubbie everyday. But my main complaint is the “loud” people who think they are the only people working on your floor. And managers who are on the phone like most of the time they spend in office. What don’t you guys go to one of those closed manager office spaces that wells provides you special people, so “we” peons don’t have to listen to you when you are on one of your team meeting calls. Can’t say that one of the most annoying habits the managers have. If you plan on team meeting call go to one of those special cubes and close the door. Others need to actually concentrate on all the work that us peons get to learn since your team has re- orged yet again and you are forced to learn new work that you don’t even have all the accesses for, but we are just supposed to figure it out. What a crapshow this is.

It has been a total morale ki-ler. The team mentality is gone. Come in, headphones in for 8 hours, go home. Every day in is a different desk. Not to mention the people trying to stake out desks as “theirs”. Creating alot of animosity.

It's funny that they won't assign seats because doing so means they'd need more square footage for everyone, and more sq ft is apparently bad. On the other hand, they love RTO mandates, cancelling accomodations, building new buildings we don't need, and leasing space in NYC, which requires dumping a ton of cash into square footage. It's a joke. Just get rid of 90% of the admin space. Stop flushing all that money down the drain for no benefit. Leave the remainder of our sq footage as 'connections space' that is unassigned for when people need to come in for training or what have you.

Of course, we all know what it's all really about. Getting people to quit is all they really care about, and that's the only strategy.

I may be in the minority but I like open seating. With open seating, I can choose where I sit instead of being stuck sitting around people I don't like or around a lot of distractions. I do agree it can be a PITA finding a seat every time I'm in the office but it's still better than the alternative. Open seating coupled with RTO makes coming back to office more tolerable because now I can hide from the folks that annoy me the most.

I think everyone should work from home so that they don't waste their time on commuting, they don't pollute the air, they don't spend gas money and everybody can be with their family. We absolutely have no reason to be loyal to toxic managers and toxic executives. Just work 8 hours and get paychecks.

To those in open seating. Just a reminder, I sneeze, cough, blow my nose and pick my nose and still wipe it all in the keyboard, desk surface and occasionally on the under side of the desk. Enjoy and yes you are welcome for the germs so you can call in sick.

Would you give up any WFH to get an assigned cube?

Also, the benefits to the company are that they need less space which is why you see them constantly consolidating and selling buildings.

Even with unassigned seating, there is still a ton of space available.

It's not an issue at my location. Sure, we have unassigned seating, but so few people come into the 3rd floor at WEC that the odds of someone sitting in your cube when you're not there is so astromically low that you're safe. Factor in nobody ever sits to either side of you and you might as well be working from home.

It's sad how far WEC has fallen. Although it's not WEC's fault. It's WFC's.

They will only need to go to assigned seating when they have 5 day in office like the good ole days. No one is going to be assigned a cube for 3 day weeks. Open seating in a flexible schedule works. So careful what you ask for. If going in 5 days a week is attractive to you….guess what. Bring those pictures coffee mugs and leave a jacket behind. Then get there early and show up 5 days. After a couple weeks people won’t even attempt to sit in your seat

I cannot think of a single benefit to employees of this open seating concept, literally everyone hates it. Yet upper management still tries to claim that they take employee feedback seriously. Yeah right.
