17 jul 2007 from marketwatch: Cisco Systems is laying off 1% of its workforce (~700 employees) at its Silicon Valley headquarters as part of a previously announced restructuring claims Marketwatch. -- CISCO released a statement acknowledging the job cuts, saying "this limited restructuring is part of an ongoing, targeted realignment of human resources and was previously discussed on our fiscal 2nd- and 3rd-quarter 2009 earnings calls."

Cisco acknowledged back in February that it planned to cut 1k to 2k positions worldwide, in what it described as a limited restructuring. John Chambers, CEO in a call with analysts at that time, had clarified that the company had no plans to make large job cuts. "Being very transparent, the definition of a company-wide layoff to me is at least ten percent of your workforce," Chambers said. "In very direct terms, we are not going to consider a layoff at this point in time." Yet Chambers added the following as well: "While there are no guarantees, we think the odds are reasonable that if we execute effectively as outlined in this call, that we may be able to avoid large layoff events."
