Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

The funny part about Qualcomm's internal transfer "opportunities" when you have been laidoff.

If you're on the verge of being laidoff or laidoff, and are looking internally for an opportunity, the irony is that you will never get hired into a higher position than where you are currently at, not matter how close you were to getting promoted. Let's say you are a Senior Software Engineer for the past 6 years and almost ready to get your promotion to Staff, but your group gets axed. Guess what? You will have to start all over again as a Senior Software Engineer at some other group (or worse, be forced to take a lower position because you are desperate).

On the other hand, if you leave the company before you get laidoff, chances are the other company will give you a equivalent staff position. After maybe 1-3 years, you're chances are much better getting hired back into QC as a staff engineer externally much sooner than it would take you to reach staff by starting over internally within another group and waiting another 6+ years (speaking from experience, of course).

That's why you see so many senior software engineers that's been "stuck" in that position for the past 12+ years. The implications of this well proven knowledge is left as an exercise to the reader, especially the ones that have outstanding offers from companies like cough mediatek or intel cough

The QC H1B population keeps attrition low. So good luck finding an open position on IOS.

I like that the IOS page says we foster a culture of exploration and mobility, or something to that effect. Maybe the HR rep on this board can help add the caveat to the page, saying "only when in a hiring binge mode". When headcount is neutral or declining, frustrations arise, demand for IOS opportunities goes way up, supply for IOS goes WAY down.

With so many layoffs going on IOS will be in lock down mode to give the poor schmucks being laid off a chance to find another position at the Q.

when external hiring is slow, IOS is basically shut down. good luck and pray for attrition

You don't start over. You will be evaluated again but you don't lose your skillset. You will get your promotion if you deserve it because you already put in the time. One guy who left QC for a few years only to return had the same title, but because of his experience he's now a VP. Promotion are based on merit rather than your length of time in a position.

mandating that all transfers be lateral title moves; that's called policy, not irony. it wouldn't make sense that you can transfer and get promoted at the same time. no free lunch, except greasy leftovers in building N break rooms

oh Trollus Emeritus, you came back for more. Always ready to point out the "harsh ironies" of Qualcomm's various telecom/semiconductor/legal/outsourcing/layoff "predicaments". On the other hand, we should thank you for reminding us of the corrosive effects of a lifetime of bitterness. And guess what? The effects wear off after reading the same basic post over and over again.

Sincerely,

Your H1-B Tenant

Qualcomm is on the way up. There are good opportunities internally. Just apply for them.
