Yeah, but how bout you let them tell their families before you plaster their names on the internet. If it were me, NO I would not want my name on the internet. Sure, people would already know but it can't be a good feeling to have someone come up to you and say "hey, saw on the internet that you got laid off, bummer huh" . Or the moment when you get home and your wife and kids found out you've been laid off when they were on the internet. Come on people, have a little class and taste or some common decency.

If you have a friend who is laid off, they will let you know. If you work with someone who is laid off, you will know. Beyond that, I see no point in asking or telling names of those laid off.

Also, before everyone thinks the criteria used to people off was performance driven, it was not. There were a lot of high performers that were older and cost the company more in salaries who were let go.

People are going to eventually find out who was laid off.

Many of the people being laid off are most likely devastated. They've lost their means of support and are leaving their friends and the daily life they knew behind. Whether legal or not, mentioning their names violates their personal privacy and is unkind. It should be their decision whether they want to be discussed by name. Do we really want to be callous to people while they're down? It makes us look like a bunch of vultures willing to get a charge out of news more than genuinely care for the people who have lost so much in this downturn. Would we be so careless in spouting off names if we were not anonymous? I think that is the test.
