Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

Canada BU in Bartlesville let go 12 yesterday and today. We were told that was all for our group. We'll see...

Newspaper says up to 90 total in Bartlesville. That's 5% of the Bartlesville workforce. This is unbelievably tragic to see happen. I am heartbroken by those we lost and the numerous others I don't know.

They have been rolling through each BU for the last two weeks with more next week (mine included). These have been deep cuts in the 20-25% range and we are looking at the same. Tough to watch and even tougher to wait out. I really enjoy what I do for the company and do not like how it has affected my friends, especially those who are living through their first downturn. Going to be hard to go to work next week.

Agree with 86901. 22 years with COP and 30 yrs in industry (mostly in manager positions) with mostly 1 ratings and sometimes 2 ratings; but a new manager giving me a 3 this past year thus a layoff. Doesn't make sense. Do they not consult with other LT members? However the direction the company is going it may be a blessing. It still doesn't feel good!

They aren't through. I understand it will go through next week. AND. . . . there will be more as year-end nears.

We were originally told the layoff criteria would be performance based, I. e. those with performance ratings of 4 or 5 would go. Then, and only then did some surmise they would take those with lower performances in rating 3. However, that is not what I saw today. They are taking strong performers who are older and paid more. It's a catch 22, however, those let go must sign a paper stating they won't sue COP to get their enhanced severance pay. I would leave a triple digit amount of pay on the table if I don't sign. Who can do that??

But what I really feel is troubling is the way people are stripped of their dignity. The process is one way in and one way out, so if you are called to a conference room, take your wallet, your purse, your phone, your tablet with you, because you won't be back to your office.

I will be ok and probably happier. I just would have preferred to do things on my own terms. Thirty-five years with the company should afford me that, but sadly not.

Are the cuts finished for now? Is there any pattern to the layoffs? Can't tell if they are just cutting the low performing employees, the older more expensive people or how they decided who was going to be laid off. What does everyone think is going on?
