Thread regarding Weatherford International Ltd. layoffs

Denied unemployment

My husband was laid off by Weatherford two months ago after 5 years. When he tried to apply for unemployment he was denied. He contacted Weatherford since he was told that the company would not contest unemployment claim. How could they do this to him? Did anyone else encounter such unfair treatment?

I got layedoff in February after 9 years of service and HR took care of everything .....even sent the ROE letter to government. I followed the steps and procedures and got the basic benefits for a month, but did not qualify for unemployment because of the package. I am not sure of the cut off of matrix the government uses, but money received from a package will go against your unemployment and will be denied and pushed to another date. I received a letter from the government stating at what date I would qualify for unemployment. By the time I received that letter I had already started working for another company. Their is light at the end of the tunnel. Best of luck to you.

There are a lot of reasons to blame Weatherford, but this is not one of them. You need to have a serious sit down with your husband, because he is either lying to you about why he is no longer with Weatherford (fired or quit) or he did not do what was required of him when he filed for unemployment or he is getting unemployment and just keeping it from you for whatever reasons. It is his responsibility as far as taking care of his family and if he is not doing this then you have an issue. For once I do not think you should be blaming Weatherford. A lot of folks were laid off and until this post there have been NO complaints about collecting unemployment.

Here is another thought- If you are JUST NOW finding out he was denied something else is happening. I was laid off less than a month and a half ago, filed for unemployment like 2 days after I was laid off, I got letter saying I was "eligible for benefits" maybe 3 days after that and then got a check the next week for 1 week (cause they hold a week). I did what I was told to do, like the below post describes.. WorkInTexas etc. So .... I am thinking that someone is not giving all of the facts in regards to this post. My opinion of course.

Yeap .... they would have sent him a letter explaining why he was denied. If it was Weatherford who denied him that letter would have explained why he was denied.. like he was "Fired" for some reason and was not "Laid Off" or did The Commission deny him for "Not complying with the requirements"...like - NOT signing up for WorkInTexas, NOT doing 3 job searches a week.. etc So I am sure it is not Weatherford who is to blame here.

Even if WFT contested his unemployment, it would have been approved by the state. It is rare that any EDD would deny an unemployment claim if the employee is laid off. Also, WFT uses a contracted service to dispute unemployment claims. I highly doubt it was WFT who responded. Did you see the denial letter from unemployment? It usually will state why he was denied. Appeal the decision....employees usually win appeals.

Need more information. What EXACTLY was the reason for denial of benefits? When he got laid off did he receive a severance package? Did he return his "General Release" paperwork? If he was in fact laid off he should have received a severance package! If he did not, something else is going on. Even with the severance package you can get Unemployment. I did with no problem.

If he was "let go" for "other reasons" besides the mass rounds of layoffs.. then well...that could be the reason. He only worked there for 5 years so it wasn't a "buyout" issue. Also when he filed for unemployment there are REQUIREMENTS you MUST FOLLOW. If he did not follow the requirements given to him by Texas Workforce Commission when he filed that could also be the reason for denial of benefits.
