Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

what next?

So, after watching the analysts meeting, and seeing so many COP staff updating their linkedIn pages after getting laid off, it sure does look like more job cuts are going to be needed. Unless you are working on one of the blessed projects, or are part of one of the favored clickes of people, you may be toast when this year comes to an end. One of my friends said that they are kinda getting rid of the geologists as they don't think they need them any longer. If you only need to drill more infill wells to make your numbers then why bother with anything other than a driller and a project planner.

I actually over heard two project engineers saying "Our Time is finally Coming" because the engineers are taking over the company. It is like a little inside joke on the company logo of "It's Our Time". I guess they don't need any help from us finance people. They had the nerve to plan out how they would divide up the team and make manager jobs for each of them once all the other people are gone. I don't hear any guidance on what is going to happen from anyone above me as they all seem to be worried that they are next to lose their jobs. I think the managers may believe there is no hope either. It is like people trapped on a life raft and realizing they only have a gallon of water left. Each man believes the water should rightfully be his and is willing to do whatever it takes to get it.

I cannot understand this but my team leader said that they don't need geologists and geophysicists any more since they have to just drill wells now. I am a data technician, but see many of my friends saying they will leave soon when they can get a better job. The engineers on my team said they don't need help running things and the managers are all engineers now too. I cannot recognize my company any longer.

COP has always favored engineers and treated their geologist like shit. I am so glad I do not work for COP anymore as of 6 years ago. I have been much more appreciated at my current company and would not go back to COP for double the salary. What jerks........It's the Conoco side that hurt the company. Phillips was fun to work for.

All I can say is that I sure hope that Exxon buys us soon to put us all out of our misery. We had a Town Hall Meeting last week and if I understood it correctly then we are not sure what we are going to do next and are waiting to hear from a group of managers who are "working on the problem". I feel like we are sitting outside an operating room waiting to hear if the patient will live. OMG, this is the worst organized layoff I've been through. For the record, I've been through about 10 layoffs in 25 years and have some comparisons.

The three geologists in my project are not around now after getting laid off last week. I worried I'll get asked to take over their duties but I only have a degree in drafting.

You're an engineer, aren't you?

Mature plays and well established targets. Geos should be reduced as they are sucking on resources.

The only target should be getting bought out by a bigger, better managed company. Not enough reserves or cash to survive for very long. And yes, more drastic cuts to come here later in the year.

You only need geologists if you want to get within 100 feet of the damn target, or if you are actually interested in identifying future targets.
