Thread regarding Halliburton Co. layoffs

Anyone with info on the future of Sperry?

I'm a new MWD hand in the US. I feel like I came into this industry at a horrible time with the slowdown and merger happening. I have not been with Sperry very long and have been hearing a flurry of rumors out in the patch about the future of the PSL. It seems to be the general consensus among the older hands that Sperry is getting sold and will not be a part of Halliburton. Many will believe it will happen sooner than we think. This seems like a massive logistical nightmare and I can already see the collateral damage from this. Does anyone have information on the future of Sperry and when it may be sold and to whom it may be sold to?

I don't like this uncertainty and have a family that counts on me bringing home my paychecks. I am strongly considering jumping ship to another directional outfit (which I know will be difficult right now) to get off this p(otentially sinking ship.

Take care of money now. Try to get a 28/28 or 7/7 or 14/14 rig crew job driller or A/d mechanic etc. Do the training for it -its never wasted. And wait it out. You can always go back to MLWD/DD or Tech.

The combination will of Inteq and Sperry will be awful!! Unless, they keep Sperry for low tier markets and Inteq for high tier. I was reading technology development presentations of Sperry (I'm a Sperry employee) and they are thinking as far as 2020 (new RSS, new motor technology, new LWD tools, etc).

For me, the better option for HAL is sell Sperry and keep Inteq. Now, what will happen with Sperry market share? HAL will gonna keep it? What will happen with the people?

Hey field hand, keep getting paid. It sounds like Sperry may be spun off, just wait and see.Halliburton is chopping heads like a rancher .

You never know your buyer may be a great employer.

The buzz is that Inteq will prevail here: Accuatrak and etcetera... But that's not necessarily a bad thing for you. Hang in there til they show you the door -- which may not happen anyway if you're a competent but less-experienced (and less well paid) hand. It's not like they come in and say, "ok, Sperry's dead; everybody out." You'll just be working for a differently-named company, using different technology. Be calm. Keep your head down and do your job.

Techguy, you are much too kind. Management has been failing for 10 years. A company does not put itself in this position over night or in a year or due to some Aaarab jacking down oil prices. Management has failed.

Lagging technology is only the tip of the iceberg here. but, is it too late? less talk more action. might be a REALLY GREAT asset for the new third or fourth tier player looking to grow. my gosh I hope the drive is good. And to 73203, yes Halliburton itself carries it's own Red Letter A, or T for toxicity if you are not a literary fan. Provided someone buys sparky, which is an active option to keep the regulatooors happy, may be a bright spot to hope for and the sooner the better given that the future of oil prices and the glut that is in storage does not bode well.

These are three of the most straightforward comments I've seen here. Oh and congrats all for the news on oilworld regarding quasar. just in time. z

Sure, Sperry technology has lagged. But the key problem confronting it is lack of high data rate MWD telemetry to sell with its formation evaluation answers. This failure contrasts with well known advances made at Schlum and Baker. Management had steadfastedly hung onto e/m, useful only at shallow depths, and negative pulse telemetry, with its own limitations. Inspite of the present economic environment, several companies are actively developing the technology. If Sperry goes under, it deserves it.

You never know...if Sperry is sold or becomes a new company, you may be better off.

Not that I know. But, it is possible given Baker has Inteq which is their drilling services company. If the merger happens, there are three possibilities:

  1. Sperry gets sold and Inteq becomes part of Halliburton

  2. Inteq get sold and Sperry stays as part of Halliburton

  3. A combination of the two with massive layoffs on both sides

I could be wrong but I have heard Inteq may be better than Sperry based on the tools and service so yes there is a good chance of scenario 1. May be someone more knowledgeable can do a comparison of Inteq vs. Sperry and that may help us reach a conclusion. Who knows! Just hang in there buddy as long as you can.
