Thread regarding Baker Hughes Inc. layoffs

Consultants

Why in the hell are they keeping consultants in overseas rolls when it should be given to a baker employee??? They should be first to go! Sorry it's a dirty game!

Consultants cost is all up front, employees are all hidden cost, insurance is the biggest cost.

Baker isn't the only company keeping contract workers over employees. My husband worked for Marathon and he got the boot after 10 years but a contract employee in the same exact position was kept. I still find it infuriating that a company would rather pay $1000 a day for a contractor instead of $300-400 for a loyal employee of 10 years.

Normally going consultant usually means you couldn't make it with the company. So when things are busy and you need dead weight to drag a hose get a contract hand.

Consultants are extremely valuable and are definitely a huge asset on BH jobs. They generally bring a wealth of experience not available within BH ranks.

Many consultants were recently laid off. I think they are valuable to have.

For sure consultant rates will now increase to fill the skills shortage being created by these lay offs.

Consultants generally work out cheaper than payroll, with no overheads to factor in.

2016 will be the year of the consultant, with payroll employees consigned to the dumpster.

Consultants are contract labor. No benefits, no payroll tax, and are easier and cheaper to let go and rehire. We will see much more of this as things stabilize. It is what it is.

A sore point with many, but like you say consultants deliver the goods and don't sit around moaning and groaning like payroll employees. Biggest moaners are Directional Drillers.

We have some employees who are just good at keeping their seats warm and bitch. Most consultants deliver.
