And remember consultants are probably better than the guys available in the salaried pools.

They're cheaper. They have consultants working in Oman for $100/day. No basic salary and no per diem or benefits. You can make more at McDonald's. Why is it confusing they'd take advantage of the massive unemployment numbers? Those guys are happy to make anything

Some jobs start to pick back up. After laying off most of the hands they have to pull crews from other district to fulfill the job. If other districts are also laying off hands, then they will go for consultants, which have a lower cost maintenance. For instance, Midland has to lay off almost all the hands. When a couple job start, they don't have hand available. CFO Kimberly Ross recently said: "I came back from Midland, Texas, and they’re pulling in crews from Colorado to meet demand. That’s what we need." Midland laid off so many hands they cannot meet the demand themselves. That's the point. Minimize head count to reduce cost and worry about the boom cycle later. Borrow from other district or go directly to consultants as needed.

Working on a straight forward directional drilling job, and find both the directional drillers on site are consultants. Why are BH laying off perfectly capable hands, and then use consultant directional drillers? Cannot be right surely.
