The only way for QC to support 30k employees is to leverage QTL profit. If QTL splits away from QCT, more than half of the 30k people will need to go. It is not just massive layoffs, it is a massive reorg and basically a reset.
If there is a split, current shareholders will receive shares for both. If one rises while the other falls, it's reall not a gain or a loss. If that is the case, splitting is bad for business.

Some detail got left out. QC splits into two halves of equal valuation and same stock price. Then, investors decide that QTL is so much more valuable, it shoots up 250%. QTL value takes its course as a semi company, and it is worth only about 25% of the value. QTL keep 1000+ people, 500 for engineering, 500 lawyering, and some for administration. Then, the 30000 people that go with QTL get slashed to 10000.
turning $68 into $165 is alchemist's / activist's dream. Sounds good to me, even with massive layoff. Better to lay-off by the beach and smoke jazz cigarettes
QC split into QTL and QCT. QTL will rise to $150 and QCT will drop to $15. PJ and S&M will make billions. Massive layoff will ensue at QCT.
If the chip business was sold what will happen to the stock price? Will it rise or fall and will it stay the same?
QC Stock price this morning is at a pitiful 67!

@106985 why should we care if a fool dumps our stock?
Motley Fool is selling its position in QCOM so Q should do something to boost investor confidence.
The spinoff of QCT is not unthinkable. Investors expect The Board of Directors to increase the stock price soon, especially since it has fallen 14% in the past year!
