Apple will never run ARM on a desktop <<<

I think this is misguided, in fact, the reason that Apple is investing so heavily in CPU design for mobile is that down the road that group can supply chips to laptop and desktop solutions from Apple. They have a history of jumping between CPU architectures and they are the ONLY company that can make it look easy ... 68000, PPC, 80x86, ARM, whatever floats Apple's boat is what they will be doing next. They are gods of software, now.

Meanwhile Google with its Chromebooks has helped ARM to catch up to ATOM cpus in performance and price (RockChip 3288) and if this keeps going maybe Google's next datacenters could be built with ARM chips which have become affordable because of the millions of $160 Chromebooks sold with ARM chips, starting in 2015.

Many companies are promoting ARM because Intel is not working as hard as people think they can, to cut prices and improve performance. The last 2 generations of Intel Chips (Haswell 4nnn and Broadwell 5nnn) are faster by tiny percentages (3%) or NOT AT ALL (Broadwell GPUs). The last 2 generations of Intel chips ONLY save on power consumption, NOTHING ELSE. Intel is being really stingy with its innovations, to drive a 4K display at 60 Hz you either need a snapdragon processor or a level-3 (i7) cpu and gpu from Intel. The Intel codename for this is GT-1, GT-2, GT-3, and GT-3e graphics. Only GT-3e graphics is NOT crippleware! There is no reason for this crippling EXCEPT for Intel greed!

If Intel is sitting on its ass, then ARM can catch up and the systems vendors (Apple A6, A7, Google with its Chromebooks) can slice CPU prices in half by cutting out the Intel middlemen.

Its typical Qualcomm behavior. Upper management says, "Guess what? We're INTEL" and they go off and spend a piddly amount of money to design a few ASIC CPUs, but their heart isn't in the project because IF IT DOESNT HAVE CODING THEORY ITS NOT REAL ENGINEERING. Then some generation comes along (64-bit) and management says, "You know what? Let's just chicken out and buy an off-the-shelf solution from ARM" and GUESS WHAT? ARM laid an egg with the 64-bit Big.Little, and all that hard work by the initial cpu architects to save power on Snapdragon 800, 801, is quickly RUINED by management's chicken-shit attitude towards a field that's "not really communications so why are we doing it?!?!?!"

I'm glad I'm gone.

How well the 820 does will completely depend on how well it does in with the Chinese OEM's and the lesser korean players like LG,etc. And that will depend on how well it does against MediaTek and to a lesser extent Intel

Anonymous107950, HAHAHA.. Apple with NEVER use a Qualcomm app processor. They have an entire group dedicated to their own app processor for the phone, and it's very unlikely they would ever split their SOC to use part their own solution and a third party. They never have, and never will. Apple will never run ARM on a desktop. So there might be a compelling reason for it to use intel on a tablet, if they ever decide to create a macbook+tablet type device. And Samsung is doing exactly what apple is trying to do, with their own app processor. So you can count out apple and samsung. Samsung is even worse, because at least apple still buys the LTE modem. Samsung is trying out their own LSI-based LTE modem on the S6/ATT version. Consider this a beta test, and if it goes well, there's absolutely no reason why they would switch back. Toshiba who?

List of things to do with your new Samsung/Apple/Toshiba device with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chip: 1) Use it on sore muscles; 2) use it as portable heater in your car; 3) turn thermostat down 10 degrees in winter and place in middle of room for extra heat; 4) use to keep feet warm in bed 5) dial cell phone using land line and use as heated vibrator!

CEO says part is great and won 60+ slots and only lost 1, so if you aren't paying attention that's a mere 2% hit. VP of marketing says overheating rumors are rubbish. case closed. I believe siliconinvestor.com message board when they say it's a vast Intel-wing conspiracy against the 810. Thanks user "JeffreyHF" for keeping us informed, and all your great comments on seekingalpha! keep up the great work everybody! CAGR > 15% and chipset margins > 25% are right around the corner!!!!

No worries, next month qualcomm will sell a heatsink that attaches to the back of your phone. Oh, in the meantime, per suggestion from Q marketing, just hold the phone really tight next to your head. Your head makes an excellent heat sink.
