I wish marketing would stop trying to pump the idea that an app processor's selling point is the number of cores. A phone doesn't need 8 cores, and while the idea about bragging about how many cores your chip has might have sold chips in the early 2013's, phone manufacturers aren't falling for this anymore. So coming up with a 10 core or 20 core app processor for bragging rights isn't going to move. Have you seen the cpu utilization of a 8 core processor on a phone for most users? Neither have I. And even in the extreme case of a power user that maximizes all 8 cores with a heavy load would long see their phone dead with a blank screen, after the battery is completely dead (mostly from the power consumption of the screen itself I might add). Have you seen a Samsung S5 or S6 moderately used last more than a day without a charger? I haven't, Lol

I think the fundamental change SM has brought in Qualcomm is follow and being dictated by market and competition. Sanjay Jha and Paul Jacobs(to some extend) used to define the market rather than rushing into things..... SM/Moorthy and company are more concerned about the things that don't matter to average user be it number of cores or 64bit till the phones work fine......
Being dictated by others has lead to decline in Qualcomm fortunes and with no sensible leader there will more layoffs.... it is just the beginning...
I don't think Qualcomm is the one who started the core numbers war. It was Mediatek. They were the ones who jumped on the quad-core and octa-core bandwagon first and made it their primary selling point. Most people wouldn't understand that the extra cores are essentially useless for the average user. They just sit idle. Mediatek were the ones who started this and Qualcomm was forced to play along, especially in places like China
