Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Hey Steve, when are you going to set aside $1B, set up a secret lab and do something revolutionary?

Ellon Musk has his EVs, rockets and batteries, Jeff Bezos just launched his own rocket... Tim Cook has his apple watch and rumor has it he also wants to drive an iCAR, Google don't need drivers and wants to give Internet to the whole world .... Qualcomm, well, more of the same: N-cores, toll collector, China's b!tch, bigger modem, buzz words (IoT), financial engineering, ad campaigns... YOU HAVE THE POWER TO CHANGE THE WORLD! yes you have access to billions of dollars, why not do something worth to be remembered by future generations? Think about it please.

Jacobs should have let him go to work for M$, which could have M$ shutdown its business already.

SM has absolutely no vision. While he kept saying to grow new business, absolutely no action on that front.

Agreed. The Qualcomm way is such a joke that anyone trying to preserve bad culture should be called out for living in the past. Precious little was good practice. The culture we enjoyed was rampant inefficiency and ineffectiveness ignored due to outstanding growth and little competition. We wax nostalgic for the excesses, not the culture. It was fun while it lasted.

@ 98372: Good theory. But having worked in product development for another major company that used this model quite successfully to develop products, I can tell you that most projects that involve a combination of HW & SW take about a minimum of 2 years to come up with something, work out the kinks, run the finished product by legal to get the patents or other protections in place, and arrange for production. Being affiliated with a major Corp. like QC eliminates some of these headaches, as they can theoretically make some of these arrangements w/r/t legal and production processes. Projects on this scale almost always involve more than 1 person--and a much larger budget. Unfortunately, they also involve more than 1 department. The corporate fiefdoms are so Balkanized at QC that, unless there are incentives for other Depts. to cooperate, they will most likely just impede your progress in order to make themselves appear more valuable to QC. The inherent lack of cooperation between departments at QC, plus their entrenched policy of doing things "the QC way" (--even if it IS technologically backward, and don't get me started on this tangent....) would invariably eat any profit potential.

IoT has the capability of revolutionizing healthcare. A company like Apple would give the power of HEALTH-care to the consumer. Other companies would give the power of SICK-care to the doctor-drugdealer, thereby selling more pharmaceuticals. Perhaps the likely scenario is a bluetooth enabled insulin monitor for all that free soda you're chugging.

I've always thought instead of firing an engineer give him a year, 100k budget, a contract giving him 10% on whatever he comes up with and set him free and be a massive VC tech incubator.

Great idea. Qualcomm has $30B+ in the bank, Time to go balls to the wall with some new tech development.

Rather than whimp out and watch the stocks fizzle.

Isnt this what PJ did? From my small point of view, SM doesnt come across as a techy geek. He seems very stock price, bottom line focused. Actually both him and DA come across that way. I think they need to start showing they know the technology and can help drive it or bring someone in that was a real engineer and can lead with the same enthusiasm.
