Thread regarding Education Management Corporation layoffs

The Art Institute is the ENRON of Education

I said this would happen years ago and people just laughed. Both organization thought they were too big to fail, too rich, too layered up, to in bed with Wall Street. People in them at management level believed their own hype until the last person turned off the lights. Then the whining and pointing fingers began. Suddenly the me, me, me attitude hit home when that million dollar retirement plan was bankrupt. Well, Ai is almost there. I give it about a year before total collapse. Who's laughing now? Oh yeah, I am. Ha, Ha.

The Art Institutes is not the ENRON of education! It's the 99¢ ONLY stores of art education!

18 out of 50 schools nailing their doors shut and counting! Can't wait for the Ai brand to sink deep in the abyss of irrelevancy!!!

My heart goes out to the students and faculty at these closed campuses. But let's be honest. The company aggressively started campuses that should never have been opened. The overzealous board pushed by Goldman Sacs looked for quick profits, slashing costs, high student enrollments and lost site of its mission to build strong programs that could place our grads. We were one of the best art schools in our area but I have witnessed our campus slowly dismantle all its strengths with these cuts and missteps. AI has always been about small class size, industry active professors, hands-on training and programs that were responsive to employment trends. Now, its about on-line learning, limited class offerings, cut-backs, adjuncts over full-timers and no real clear vision for the future. Decisions come from EDMC corporate and not from the participation of staff and faculty at the college. We have two campuses within 30 minutes of one another and they had talked about opening a third. This move to close smaller satellite schools and campuses with less then 500 students is the right decision for the health of the the Art Institutes. Let's hope this effort is not too late. As Millenials age out, GEN Z will be a smaller group to pursue and they will be a much more educated consumer after watching their older brothers and sisters struggle with a down economy and crushing student debt. We can only hope the new EDMC board made up this time of mostly educators and not money managers will get this company back on track. If not, the FEDs and court system may make the decision for them.

101609 - Non Profits are not the same, anymore then a Chevrolet Vega is to a lamborghini. They both are cars, they both get you somewhere, they both need gas and they both make a profit but that dose not put them in the same league. Ironically your For-Profit Chevy Vega coast almost as much as a Lamborghini education but delivers far less performance. Please stop with your childish logic about how they are all the same, your lack of reason is nauseating and not fooling anyone except maybe yourself.

Why all the focus on for profit schools? What about being $129,000 in debt from a private non profit school. What is the difference? No matter where you go if you take out loans, you are in debt. Even non profits are making a profit. Sadly this site has turned into nothing more than a nasty complaint site. Look for a job, go to another school, be in charge of your own destiny. Quit blaming everyone for you deficiencies.

@Anonymous101320, for EDMC to be the Enron of education, the public needs something like the "Grandma Millie" tapes: information that shows that EDMC was DELIBERATELY defrauding students and JOKING about it. If you have that kind of documentation, please let me know. Or you can try contacting David Halperin.

The Art Institute is a stain on education that will stick around for years to come. Thanks a lot EDMC, you wanted to be a household name, now you are.
