Thread regarding Education Management Corporation layoffs

Why do you all stay with EDMC?

I can't understand why you all stay at EDMC. I worked for EDMC for almost 4 years and went through 2 off the big rifs and it was horrible. It hasn't changed from then, in fact it has gotten worse from what I'm hearing from employees still with EDMC. I never understood how dysfunctional the company was until I left. You all know layoffs are coming so do yourself a favor and find a different job. EDMC cares nothing about you or your families. Good old DR in the Chandler office is the poorest excuse for management that I have ever seen. Leave people, LEAVE!!!!!!!!!!! You will be AMAZED on how good you will feel once you do...

The ONLY reason why some of you are still at EDMC is because you are bottom-feeding LOSERS with no real life skill, other than to dupe and ruin young financial lives!!!

I was humiliated during an interview when the employer reprimanded his assistant for scheduling an applicant with EDMC on their resume. I was told employers/HR's are actively looking for EDMC on resumes. Taking it off your resume only leaves a gap that you will find impossible to explain (depending how long you worked there). The only choice you have is to start over and reinvent yourselves into a new industry. i won't sugar coat any of it and say it's really hard and not for the meek or weak! Your friends or family's generosity of letting you crash on their couch will run out. There will be many days where you will sit in your car eating cat food, thinking back on the EDMC days.

I love the tone of panic in some of these posts! How do you think the young students feel after you all have ruined their financial lives! Four years of their lives, a worthless degree, very little (if any) job prospects, pornographic amounts of debt and nothing to show for it! Not to mention no means to pay it back. Chances are they're in default, so their credit is shot. They'll never own a house. They'll never know what buying a new car feels like. Some may never get married or have children because they cannot simply afford it. Wages garnished. They'll never retire, since their Social Security checks will be intercepted.

For those of you who works or used to work for EDMC, you still have a chance to redeem yourselves for the Big Guy in the Sky! Side with these students! Whistle blow all the deceitful practices you used to dupe students under the direction of your superiors. Help the people you victimized find some form of financial relief from this real life situation you put them on!!!

For healthcare, assuming your young and healthy and no-one has a pre-existing conditions. it also would be expensive to pay the deductible mid-year. Lets not UPMC- Highmark war.- both seriously scary options Stop reacting and have some consideration for others.

Kindness I was able to purchase high mark community blue for myself and family for under $700 a month with a $2500 deductible directly before obamacare . It can still be done. Obamacare is just a healthcare market place with government subsidies for those who qualify and apply. World gonna eat you up ..

If you did not hear the Supreme Court is ruling on "Obamacare". There is no way to ascertain if this will be available. It also will be expensive due to severance and income and all deductibles will begin. There is no way to know what the Court will do. You are not only negative you do not have knowledge of the facts.

Kindness counts. Like I had posted earlier on a different string the real world gonna eat you alive. You can buy your own healthcare direct for less than half what the EDMC cobra program is. Cobra was just means for you to procure your Heath insurance thru your previous employer. You can buy it direct now . Time to put away the sippy cup and grab a coffee mug. Wake up and take some Responsibility for yourself.. And you faculty, I presume from your writings?

It is a volatile job market. Good people are losing jobs and don't know what to do. COBRA insurance costs are outrageously expensive. Faculty may be tarnished with Art Institute on their resume. If an individual wants to continue teaching the market is difficult. It does seem incredibly hypocritical and economically outrageous to release so many faculty and leave Department heads and above. It is hard to figure who they are supervising since there are so few full time remaining.

@428 I sure hope most of the folks in your situation, yourself included, prepared for being "displaced" and were not living to "high on the hog" , going to have to make some serious standard of living adjustments in most transitions. I had said it before, EDMC paid well and that creates a sort of indentured servitude. Very Stressfull, Lived it myself for almost 5 years.

We stay because our skill sets and salaries won't translate into any other job unfortunately so we are trapped. Most don't want to stay and apply elsewhere but every time we get an interview the hiring managers say, "EDMC huh, isn't that the for profit company? Which department did you work in there?" If you respond admissions they tend to cut the interview short and thank you for your time. So we are left with feeling like garbage everyday knowing the job is morally wrong and we take it from both ends because management knows we can't make this much anywhere else. I've been there for years and can't seem to find a way out. Most of us just feel trapped and beaten down and it's an awful feeling.

I left a few years ago after working for EDMC for several years. I was so stressed out the last year that I just couldn't take it any more. I'm sorry for everyone still working for EDMC. I recommend that you leave now if offered severance. If not, find another job ASAP them leave. It's worth it to take a pay cut. Life is too short to work for such a corrupt, mismanaged company.
