Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

After completely my job hunt, here's my take on the current job market in San Diego

Well, I just completed my job search and I'll be starting a new job in a much better environment soon. I thought I'd share what I think the current job market in SD looks like.

I don't need to talk about the Bay Area market, because from what I can tell, it's still really hot. So no one should have a problem finding anything in the Bay Area unless you are just grossly incompetent. Here in San Diego, the job market isn't as bad is it seems. You can classify opportunities into 3 categories. For all the Directors and above that aren't hands on and have no good connections with other people, you're really screwed in San Diego. No seriously, most of the employers hiring aren't looking for pure management positions, and if they are, those positions aren't the same level as what is at QC. So if you're one of the unlucky directors or higher that is going to get axed, good luck... For engineers that are staff engineers and below, the job market looks very "competitive", and can probably squeeze a slight bump in your total compensation, particularly if you are in software or IT. Hardware engineers and low level embedded bit flippers can find stuff decent work in medical devices company. If you areaAbove a staff level engineer, you can find a "comparable" job, or slightly less than comparable. The biggest issue is that at other companies, they don't have nearly as many engineering levels, so a lot of the upper levels at the Q ends up getting capped at the staff level. You can try to negotiate with them a bit and make it almost comparable, but it's slightly harder too. In all, the market doesn't look too bad, because there isn't a lot of people actively looking, at least not right now. So if you really want to be sure, you probably want to start early and start looking sooner versus later, and keep in mind what's going on at other companies.

So far no major layoffs from any of our competitors, based on what some of the folks I know in those companies are saying. .Heard from others, Intel in the process of doing layoffs, but most of this is NOT in San Diego. San Diego is the mobility group (LTE + connectivity), which they are trying to ramp up. There is a hiring freeze, but no layoffs (yet) Heard from others, Broadcom's pending merger with Avago has not yet caused any layoffs. Folks there feel that because bulk of the SD Broadcom group is connectivity with virtually no overlap with Avago's portfolio, they think the bulk of the cut will come out of headquarters in Irvine. However, some are concerned that Avago might end up ditching the entire connectivity business, because Avago historically only likes high margin businesses. If that happens, they think it's more likely to be sold to another company, since it's still profitable. No deal will get finalized until late 2015/early 2016, so probably nothing significant this year. Heard from others, Intuit is a good place to go for software. No major plans for a layoff, though their tax group is getting saturated with lower growth and have done some layoffs earlier. They are trying to branch out elsewhere. This might be a good place for folks with mobile application software experience to go, since they've been trying to push into the mobile space for some time. Illumina is on fire right now. If you're doing IT and enterprise software, apparently that's the place you want to go since they are on a hiring binge. Folks there say benefits there is great, and relatively good work/life balance. Walmart in Carlsbad is hiring software engineers. Yes, I know don't laugh. It's part of their massive push into eCommerce to go head to head with Amazon. Personally, I couldn't bring myself to say "I work at Walmart", but hey if you need to find a decent good paying job, it is what it is. If you're flexible in community to Orange County, the doors also significantly open. But you can figure that one out yourself.

@Anonymous109078, as long as you are happy and are treated well, that's what matters the most. Not everyone's career path will be the same. The Q's environment will work for some and not work for others. So you got to do just what maximizes your personal wallet and happiness. Hopefully, the two won't be mutually exclusive.

Thanks to the Op for a good thread.

I work in QCT and I'm one of those that put in a lot of hours. I like what I do so I don't really mind it at all.

If I left at 5pm I would probably find myself doing something else geeky anyways, why not do it at work.

I know there are many groups that leave at 5pm but I can't spend my time worrying about what other people do.

When you spend all your time thinking how unfair everything is, you will make your life miserable.

Enjoy what you have and make the best of it. Opportunities are out there if you think the grass is greener.

Q ate a big turkey and it's trying to figure out how to get back into the swing of things. Lots of bright engineers, I truly think the future is bright.

Success is its own worst enemy, in the world of technology and innovation. As tech companies get big and successful, it begins to protect the market by coming out with the more derivatives in shorter time. At the same time it is looking to keep competition out by marketing strategy. At the end of day, innovation becomes secondary to the gain from cost cutting and market share. QC has reached that point years ago, and financial engineering is the company focus going forward. Individual employee contribution matters less and less, and execs gets compensated more for something they don’t contribute to.

@108809: I agree that there are a lot of bright and talented people in QC, young or old. However, the perception of self-ability is not reality. People get comfortable with the pay and often equate how much they make with their ability. The fact is that major of them would fail in starting something new on their own. Under the shield of the mighty QC, projects could fail and people could fail, but the failures are allowed and no one gets fired. In a startup or small company, any failure could mean the end of the company. Just look around, how projects failed over the years.

What I don't get is that there are lot of people in QCT slaving away at a ridiculous work hours, while in another part of the company goes home 9 to 5. And the irony of this is people in QCT are compensated the worst versus the group(s) that belong to the country club. And there's a high probability that when the ax does fall, it will come out of the more productive groups in QCT, the ones slaving away, already the worst compensated. And these people slaving away at QCT are the ones that if they just spent as much time bettering their own skills versus continuing to slave away at a stupid LTE protocol/etc, they would be so much better off elsewhere. It took me awhile to figure that out, but once that dawned on me, it was a revelation. So for me it was a no brainer. Every minute I spent overtime in QCT, was a minute of personal time I was sacrificing to not future myself and every minute I was wasting ruining my own marketability for opportunity elsewhere.When we start engaging in financial engineering, to me that was enough. To me, that means, no matter what I do, it doesn't mean shit. It's now just a numbers game.

@ Anonymous108807...I find that sort of hard to believe. Because from looking at a lot of the old colleagues at the Q, a lot of them are really bright and talented, just stuck in a dead end role. There's probably a viewpoint of getting "use to" the cushy lifestyle of the Q in which you don't have to do that much to remain at a relatively stable and cushy position and to get "lazy" about polishing their abilities. And for some people, you probably don't need to because you're survive whatever cuts a big company makes. But for all the others that feel they are in danger or are just plain sick of a larger company with a bunch of non-tech/hands on people being directionless, you do have options if you are willing to put your brain to work. We're not in a full blown recession in which there are no jobs and no opportunities in tech. And capability of Q engineers isn't the issue. I think it's willingness from. That probably explains why there's an exodus of the younger engineers from the older folks. the younger ones are willing to move to further their career. That in itself is a problem, because it's unlikely much "new stuff" will come out of older/burnt out employees that just want the keep the status quo. And with a younger brain drain, by the time things get bad, it will be too late, because all the innovation will come from everywhere else... But that's a point of a separate discussion. The older ones are hanging on dear life from the fear of having to start over, when reality is, provided you are still hands on, it's really not bad at all.

@108794: Most people are not as good as you described. They have a misperception of their ability because they are paid a lot. Even at below market pay in QC, the pay is pretty decent compared to the general public. At Senior Staff or Director level, the pay is really significant. Not many can go out to create new things. QC got to where it is by investing heavily with thousands of worker bees. Collectively, QC is strong. Individually few QC employees can start something on their own.

One last note. I know that some of you may have "allegiance" to the Q and think that everything that the Q makes is #1 and the world should all use Q stuff. But reality is that, shit doesn't work like that in the real world. You'll run into companies that use Q's stuff. You'll run into companies that use Broadcom's stuff, or Marvel, or TI, etc, or you'll run into companies that mix and match and make you work with one part from Q and another part from TI and another part from Broadcom,etc. This is where from educating yourself with these new skills (which shouldn't take that long), you got to drop any pre-conceived bias you have that Q's products are "better" than everyone else's. While that may be the case in some of the products, It's in your best interest to learn as many different SDK's from as many companies as possible, because then your skill/know-how is about how to do things independent of a particular connectivity solution. You don't want to limit yourself by saying, "I only know how to do this on a Q's connectivity solution" or "I only know how to do this on Intel's solution" (intel doesn't have one yet, btw :)). What you want to be able to say is, "tell me what you want, and I can show you how to build it with a TI or Broadcom or Qualcomm connectivity solution or any combination thereof, because, yes I'm that good. And that's why you'll be paying me more for it than the other guy that only knows how to work on XYZ's platform."

I'm so sick and tired hearing good engineers and geeks get totally demoralized by managers and bean counters that have no real skills and only know how to play numbers game. A lot of you are probably pretty sick of it too, and once you start seeing enough of it at one place, you being to think that it's like this everywhere. No, it is not. Geeks like you worked hard to learn all this shit, not many people are willing to do all this shit, and not many people can do all this shit. So why do you continue to take all this crap from people that can't do it themselves? Who's really up shit's creek if they get laidoff? A geek that has the mental aptitude to pick up something technical quickly, or a bean counter or HR rep? Think about that one... Maybe the reason why a lot of non-geeks needs to severely depend on ass kissing is because they have no choice. That's they only way for them to survive. They have no other marketable skill. Geeks, figure out how to monetize your leg up in your capability. Stop taking shit from bean counters that couldn't write a hello world program if their life depended on it. Have some frickin self respect.

Come on guys. You really got get get off the sorry-whoa-as-me mentality. The great news is that a lot of this new connectivity development at all levels from hardware to top level app software can all be done from the comfort of your home. The dollar cost to actually pick this up as a hobby is at a historic low. Neglible. Maybe a tank or two of gas. We're lucky to be in an era were hardware is so cheap and readily avalable, and software is cheap and almost free, and there's so much how to/know-how out their on the web that you don't need to spend $$$$ to pay for training courses. I remember when I wanted to play with my first personal computer, it cost my parents $4000 USD back in the early 80ies for a Apple IIe with a whopping 128K ram and TWO 5.25 floppy drives.. Whoohoo! And then slightly older, it cost me $4000 for my first Mac IIsi with a screaming 68030 20mhz processor, 8MB of ram and "large" 80mb hard drive because I wanted to do Mac software when I was in college for fun (I was a wireless comm EE guy that at the closest thing to software I got was some DSP theoretical shit that I had to implement with assembly on a TI processor, and I hated it... You guys that do this for a living, I give you much respect.) That's $4000 like 15-20 years ago...You know how much that $4000 would be worth today!!!!! Today, you wouldn't even need to spend close to $4000 to get most of the decent hardware. And even if you did, that $4000 is closer to $2000 the time I spent $4000. So come on, get off of your ass and fire up that garage lab, and just start building shit... You really have no excuse not to, and if you do it while the majority of others aren't wiling to motivate, even better for you versus everyone else.

FWIW: a lot of the connectivity SDK's are free or cost very little.. Google for them : WIFI SDK, Bluetooth LE (BLE) SDK. While you're at it, you might as well pick up something like Raspberry Pi. The good news for a lot of you low level bit flippers is that most of the people either don't know how to do it, or really suck at doing it, or hate doing it. So if your that close to working with the hardware, there is far less competition from a job perspective than say a simple Android or iOS app developer. Currently, there are enough jobs/demand for good mobile developers such that if you have mobile app skills, you can get by without needing to bring anything else to the table. In my opinion, this will last for maybe another 2 years. The ideal person would know how to do both embedded connectivity development and phone app development (you don't have to be an expert at both, just competent). You really need both skills to build a product, and if you have both skills (again just competent, not necessarily an hardcore expert), you shouldn't have a problem finding something. Because this connectivity market we span industrial appliances (think smart appliances, locks, tv's, etc), wearables (fitbit for example), medical devices, toys hobbies (drones I think are just a start. There's going to be an increasing push for toy companies to push for things too imho). The with Q and their competitors is that they don't know which companies are going to take off with which ideas (since the goal is to sell more chips). However, that shouldn't concern you. If you got the know-how, you should be well positioned to take advantage of any opportunity that comes up, regardless of which industry it comes up in.

You guys really need to get out of just thinking about your current job/role implementing some part of the LTE/WIFI/Bluetooth spec. Those are really specialized skills which paid a lot in the past when many companies needed this. However, if this is all you can do, it's also going to limit who wants to employ you because not many companies are trying to build a LTE/WIFI/Bluetooth chip these days. Your choices would be to remain at Qualcomm and pray you don't get laidoff or replaced by cheaper labor, or go work for one of the Asian companies that won't pay you nearly as much to do the same thing. Broadcom,Intel, Marvel, Nvidia: they are all in survival mode as well, because all this stuff is quickly getting commoditized. You got to go after the high touch, "creative" things that cannot be so easily outsourced. Custom built hardware, custom built embedded software, application software specific to one small company's product(s). That takes a lot of ingenuity and requires a lot of creative thinking that cannot simply be "outsourced". You can outsource pure labor, but you can never outsource creativity. As a U.S. worker that needs to have a higher pay/compensation to survive in our higher cost environment, you have no choice but to distinguish yourself on the creativity front. You won't win competing on cost.

Anonymous108669, While what you say might be true, I think though a little of "self-mentoring" will make most of your lower level "bit flippers" very marketable. I'll give you an example. There's a lot of push into IOT. Yes, I know IOT as described by the Q and any of their competitors is marketing spin. True. However, there are real companies that are really trying to build IOT type devices. And they have virtually no clue on how to do this. So how can you use this to your advantage? Simple... Grab the latest connectivity SDK's from some leading connectivity players (Qualcomm, Broadcom, TI, etc), and run through the numerous tutorials on how you can make a embedded connectivity "device". Then brush up your resume and say you are working a Qualcomm and emphasis you have hands on experience working with all the IOT connectivity solutions. Most of this stuff is all embedded/low level shit that although I can do and have done, I really don't like doing that I would rather have other embedded/firmware guys do. And regarding hardware...You know how many times I wish I could design a board with all my connectivity sensors without having to depend on someone that's a hardware guy to do it? So for example, if you could land a job at Fitbit, I'd say at least in the short term, your stock is going to do great. And this trend will continue. A lot of the traditional industrial companies (the ones that produce appliances,etc), all the sudden want to be "smart", but they really don't have the know-how on how to get there. That's where a lot of you hardware/firmware/embedded software guys really need to play in, and be in a position to show these old companies how. None of the chip companies are going to be coming up with all these solutions for all these opportunities. If you are one of those people that can help those companies build it, you have a very promising future.

Senior Staff engineer in the Bay Area here - I am not yet actively looking as yet. My take from what I have heard - In core software development getting anywhere good should be fairly a breeze.

Problem is that most of the QC folks have worked only in low level embedded firmware and are not good coders - will not make it in the software interviews at Google, Facebook, Dropbox etc. if you are in hardware or low level firmware - like modem ASIC, radio, even comm systems algorithms or generic hardware integration - getting a job is going to be a challenge even in the Bay Area even more so in San Diego. Apple tends to hire new grads/ younger people to real experienced folks in a 3:1 ratio nowadays

Yes. Haven't decided which one yet. Though I officially already committed to one and gave a start date that is soon. I probably will go to that one, but still the other one keeps calling me back asking if I had a change of mind. Money at the second one is better. Job role/project sounds better on the one I committed to, which I'm about 90% sure I'm going.
