Clinton: Stop For-Profit Colleges From Targeting Veterans

Democratic presidential candidate and former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton speaks at the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials' (NALEO) 32nd Annual Conference at the Aria Resort & Casino at CityCenter on June 18, 2015 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Hillary Clinton announced on Thursday a new plan intended to stop for-profit colleges from fleecing veterans who use federal G.I. Bill funds to attend school.

Speaking before a roundtable with veterans in Reno, Nevada, Clinton focused her remarks on the so-called 90-10 rule. The rule requires for-profit colleges to accept at least 10% of their money from private dollars rather than federal financial aid and loans, with the idea of holding the schools more accountable to the open market.

But an unintended loophole in the 90-10 rule means that federal military benefits like the Post-9/11 G.I. Bill can count toward schools’ 10%. That leads for-profit schools to aggressively target veterans in search of federal dollars, often deceptively. Proponents of a new bill say that veterans at many for-profit schools have high dropout rates and leave badly in debt.

Clinton would plan to close the loophole.

887...damn man, someone has finally made the same argument I have at work. The fact that they receive so much from the feds only proves they are manipulators and not truly a "free market" business. They just saw an opportunity and (hate to say this) were "smart" enough to build a business around it. Good insight.

Somehow the Butcher of Bangazi will figure how that loophole will close and then open into the Clinton Foundation. She is a bigger crook than the " for profit" schools she is bitching about. Well I see a few wasted presidential votes in this thread. We are all f***ed.

It was actually worse then that. EDMC had a fake military website (which has since been taken down) that lured military into thinking they were talking to other military for advice on what to do after they were done with service. Like a free site for vets to discuss possible options. Turned out it was set up by EDMC through a 3rd party so their fingerprints would not be all over it. The whole site was secretly geared to drive potential military students to The Art Institutes without disclosing who they were. Shady, shady, shady.

No wonder we waive app fees for military. recoup it back many times over. amazing how many military we convince to apply due to no app fee and the lure of govt paid education. we don't even try to determine what they actually want to do with their degree should they graduate.

Tailgating is a great analogy. Imagine if For-Profits actually had to rely on the open marked for funding instead of sucking off the tit of the government. It's ironic that For-Profits pitch is that they are free market yet the first place they go to for cash is government and would not even dream of trying for open market cash only.
