Apple (AAPL) to Design TDDI Chips In-House

Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) is said to be developing touch and display driver integration (TDDI) chips in-house, according to Digitimes.

The report noted that the TDDI solutions would also have integrated fingerprint scanners. The next-generation of iPhone is expected to come with the chips, which would provide for the device to be thinner, narrower, and have no Home button.

Apple also currently designs its CPUs in-house.

Shares of Apple are positive in early trading Monday.

Its a open secret that aapl is working with intel for modem for its next iphone

If they succeed or not that's a different question

Before samsung brought their own processors both modem n app qc engineers could never dream about this

Baseband is a costly endeavor. And it would be foolish for Apple to pay the money to do it. What I do see Apple doing is slowly switching over to x86 for their tablet, and for their tablet (which sales are declining due to erosion caused by the bigger iphone6 plus) to eventually be merged into a macbook+tablet product similar to how the surface tablets are with a detachable screen that doubles as a thin laptop. And when that happens, i am sure Intel will bundle a sweet deal for them to use their LTE chip. Apple computers will never go arm. And it really isn't making much sense to use x86 for the desktop and arm for the tablet moving forward.

My sources say that Apple is not working on a baseband solution. Or for that matter a connectivity solution. If they are, they are years away since nothing has shown up in any of the interop testing groups with a chip from Apple. That would be the first place we would see it, and no one that I know that is involved in iterop testing both at the Q and at our competitors have seen it....unlike Samsung, which just about everyone has seen their LTE baseband and their NFC and WiFi and Bluetooth chip from their LSI group. Samsung's LTE is decent. So is their NFC. Their WiFi/Bluetooth currently is not up to par. But that will probably change in a year or two.
