Thread regarding Education Management Corporation layoffs

It will be hard so be supportive

For those that stayed or had to stay for their families tomorrow will be tough. You may lose your job, watch a friend dismissed, or be just left shell shocked at all the news. The percentages don't matter if it is you let go but they do matter for those remaining. More work, more stress, less people who know what they are doing to answer questions, etc. not to mention the endless waiting for the next round...

Tomorrow needs to be about supporting those who are saying goodbye and save the bashing for another day.

You can then continue the discussion of how you board up the windows and turn out the lights.

This may be someone's life changing event. Help them.

@realworld "Try getting the same level of education or support at a CC or state school. They are the scam artists and I graduated from a state school" did you read your own post? That looks like you are calling a CC a scam to me. By the way, I did not grow up in a wealthy environment. I actually went to a CC before I transferred to a 4 year college for a BS. Your logic makes no sense. People who are struggling will pay far less and get a better education from a CC then a for-profit. There is no scam there, only competition...as there should be. Not everyone should go to college. That is really a bad idea left over from the 80's. Not everyone is wired for it. In other countries they train people based on their skills then sent to an appropriate trade style schools. And the people with trade skills are just as respected as people with more traditional college degrees. A piece of paper dose not a person make.

It's still possible to do the right things. I actually talked a single mother of 3 out of applying the other day. I just couldn't see takingm advantage of her and putting her 70-100k in debt when she already couldn't make ends meet. I honestly hate when students want to go for their associates first. Everytime I want to scream, "go to your local CC, it's cheap and the classes transfer." But I still get students in because that is my job no matter how ethically bankrupt it is... If I even have a job after today.

  1. Never said I was entilted to anything did I? ALSO never said CC was a scam! Sounds like you grew up in weathly environment & making a living on your own isn't something you need to worry about. Parents probably paid for your whole college education right? Ever stop to think about what people do that are severely handicapped & have no support in their lives? Or those single moms out there that never had the chance to go to school? For lots of people Online education was their only shot to make something out of themselves. AND I've seen them do it!

@ realworld, Spare me the shallow veiled sympathy. You dont care about the students or you would have done something years ago. CC is not a scam, its a stepping stone for general ed. Most go into REAL colleges and university if they have decent grades or talent. For-Profits are the scam, facts dont lie, lowest job placement and graduation rate. Just because you work hard does not mean you are entitled to anything, whatever happened to talent an skill? Only Millennials raised by Boomer parents have this false sense of entitlement. If just working hard in this country was actually valued in the workplace, most millionaires and sports figures would be making 30,000 a year and most nurses, teachers, scientist and firemen would be millionaires. Creative edge belongs to those who deliver it, the real kids that have real talent the go to real art schools. If anything, The Farce Institute created an zombi army of mediocrity giving all the creative fields a bad name.

Couldn't agree with this post more. Been a long time employee. Beleive me I have seen ppl do things that are disgusting & beyond. We have leaders that are a joke! Want to preach about student success but thats NEVER what its about & it never will be. It only has to do with the number. Nothing else. But I, for a long time have made it doing the right thing . Taking care of my students, believing in them supporting them, watched over 100 graduate. I have seen lots become successful have seen a lot fail over & over. I feel for our students, but those who work here are also victims as we were lied to about a lot of the same things. Tricked into believing our statistics were legit. For a lot of us by the time we realized it & light was shed by lawsuits, years had gone by. once your at a job for 5 plus years its hard to turn your back, lots of us have familes to provide for its not that easy to up & walk away. Some of us truly like helping students too. I want to see talented people use their ceativity & not go to the nearest state school to major in business or communications like every other god damn person in america. I once belived in our education. Every day gets harder & harder to do so. Good luck to everyone tomorrow. Hoping none of my very close friends or myself get let go just yet. But even if we make it, its time to get out my friends. Next time is right around the corner & this worrying is exhausting & downright unhealthy!

757, get off of the band wagon. Layoffs are scary, sad and stressful. We care about our students and do not want them to be left with unfulfilled requests or needs. Hundreds of us could loose our jobs tomorrow and you shove crap in our face. Grow up! You are obviously self entitled and cannot own up to your own bad choices in life. My fellow employees and I will not deny students the right to attend school, we will help students who ask for support and they will hopefully graduate and show off they skills. Students who WORK HARD should have the opportunity to be in a major that fits their goals in life and if AI closes... there goes the creative edge our county has. Try getting the same level of education or support at a CC or state school. They are the scam artists and I graduated from a state school - know first hand their bs.

@757 get the f*** off of here! Some of us don't even deal with students! It's unfortunate for everyone involved. Students and employees.

Just remember the students you all screwed! If you didn't lie to them to make a buck this would not be happening. You don't see community colleges or state colleges going out of business do you? It's about money and not students! Period.

I agree with you completely. Even if I am spared tomorrow it will not feel like a victory. I'm glad to see that there is some compassion there.
