Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Executives & Management is responsible for Company's downfall

how come the top executives thought world will always use qcom chips forever - so happy days will last forever - so let's not worry about the company, future, etc. - let's just concentrate on pocketing as much money as we can? Couple of months backs our executives (SM, CFO, Murthy, Christiano, etc) were awarded RSUs worth millions of dollars vesting over 5 year - just for to take qcom to the current miserable situation... seems like they were getting so much bonus, RSUs that they were obsessed with just money and did not think about qcom's future; now suddenly they all woke up in dark thinking how can we still survive - and one idea came up in their minds - why don't we lay-off couple of thousand people -it looks like something we can do it - yes we can, yes we can, yes we can.. RIDICULOS - SHAME ON THEM - SHAME ON THEIR FAILURES

Also,

as layoff seems inevitable, I hope the middle management positions get eliminated most - I know a VP collecting paycheck for watching youtube and espn most of the time, rest of the time hoping people visit his office to satisfy his ego

I hope qcom doesn't lose real talent to retain such VPs, it's really frustrating to see a great company's sun setting due to such people.

Worked for LG, Motorola, Nokia, Nortel... all fell for the same reasons. Not thinking ahead on trends, not keeping check on bloated bureaucracy, not keeping an eye on quality of work or finishing the final product - just meeting deadlines, not spending the time to fix what is broken. LG.... just keeping making those texting phones until no one wanted them, Motorola.... couldn't think past the Razr 2/3/4 whatever and the multiple Q models, Nokia thought they were invincible and moved from one crappy OS (Symbian) to another (Windows Phone), Nortel.... keep selling network gear for a promissory note from startups that would never pay and fudge the accounting. I currently consult for Sony, Kyocera and HTC... see the same problems there. Samsung's answer to falling revenue is to hire more Korean engineers to push products out at a faster cycle....

Anonymous121540: Your thought looks very good in concept and that is probably the most optimal way to run any business...startups have more open culture and most of the people do their job because everyone interest aligned towards company success and they are more close to your thoughts. As company become successful and start growing all these layers of bureaucracy and power game get created to everyone try to maximize their share of pie and worrying about growing pies come later...

Most of the complaints on this boards are from people who are good engineers who joined this company to work on challenging engineering problems but frustrated with all the politics and bureaucracy...to be successful in current Qculture, political skills are much more important than engineering skills and that eventually lead to deterioration in innovation, losing technical edge,Deterioration in quality...and all this happens very FAST in industry we are in.. I would not blame engineers for current QMess because Engineers have no power other than raising concerns, most of issues raised here are already been raised to management by multiple people and management is fully aware of the issues but their is no motivation to resolve it, Engineers who raise concerns get retaliated against and politically suppressed so either they also start play same game or leave the company, Engineers raising concerns here are the crowd of engineers who is interested in spending time on Engineering issues but they are bogged down by unnecessary work created by bureaucracy, credit for their work stolen...I have seen this company changing its culture very fast ( last 4-5 year) and its majority of Q is no longer operated as Engineering company, its more sort of mass production factory to churn out product as fast and as cheaply as possible....I think its just race to bottom and part of how it works in mobile tech industry...( Mot,NOK,ATT,BELL,Lucent..and many more) SO I think we can not blame management also... Engineers need to realize its no longer a Engineering driven company and adjust their expectations accordingly and try to monetize QCOM as much possible, build financial cushion be ready to jump in to next better opportunity( keep skillset relevant ) before this ship sink....

( Sorry for typos if any, I was typing it on my iphone, could not resist to comment..)

Easy to point the finger up, but after reading this board, it's obvious the responsibilities fall on all layers. How many engineers have posted about not caring, not documenting, not wanting to work with another race, purposely sabotaging projects, etc... responsibility falls on engineers all the way up to execs. If you keep looking for faults in others you won't take the steps necessary to improve yourself, your team, and your co-workers. turning this ship around it not about making execs and mgmt accountable, it's about everybody working together to change the culture, the company, and the direction we are headed.

If you're not on board and want to continue the status quo, suggest you talk to your manager and ask to be on the GTFO list.

QC should lump in some of their legal staff. There's a bunch of them at the VP level working at about 30% capacity. A lot of surfing and vacations in between RSU collection and ESPP selling. Most live west of the I-5.
