Chevron plans to cut 950 jobs in Houston by the end of 2015 as part of a plan to eliminate about 1,500 jobs worldwide in an ongoing environment of low oil prices.

The San Ramon, California-based energy major said it is reducing jobs across its corporate centers, so 950 will be in Houston and about 500 jobs will be cut in San Ramon, said Chevron spokeswoman Melissa Ritchie. About 50 job cuts will come internationally, she added.

Another 600 or so staff contractors positions also will be reduced from 24 groups in the corporate center, Ritchie said, so many of those cuts will come from Houston and San Ramon as well. Out of the 1,500 permanent position reductions, about 270 of them are existing vacancies.

“In light of the current market environment, Chevron is taking action to reduce internal costs in multiple operating units and the corporate center,” Ritchie said in a prepared statement. “These initiatives, which are currently underway, are focused on increasing efficiency, reducing costs and focusing on work that directly supports business priorities. Efforts in our corporate center are targeting cost reductions of approximately $1 billion. Additional cost savings are expected to be achieved across the enterprise.”

Chevron currently counts about 8,000 Houston-area employees and fewer than 65,000 workers worldwide. Chevron had closer to 9,000 Houston workers two years ago.

Chevron previously had nixed employee growth plans for Houston and halted plans in late 2013 to build a 50-story downtown office tower. Chevron had previously said the tower was being delayed until at least 2016.

“Chevron does not anticipate final approvals for a new office building in Houston in the near term,” Ritchie added. “We remain committed to the new building, however we continue to exercise strong capital discipline when assessing and prioritizing investments.”

This is just the public announcement of the Project Alpha cuts we were informed about last week. The only thing of interest is the geographic distribution of the cuts. As far as the WARN act is concerned, at the ETC town hall today, the HR rep told us that if you are "left standing", you will be placed into the redeployment pool for 6 weeks and paid for the duration. Combine that with the notices we have received to date warning us of significant budget reductions and possible effects on the workforce plus the large amount of time it will take to complete the ROM exercise, and I think you will find that the required amount of time has passed. Chevron's extensive legal department won't let the company make such a basic mistake. If you are hoping for ground for legal action on this point, keep looking because this won't do it.

Question is, will Chevron layoffs trigger WARN (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification) -federal law for employers of > 100 people to provide 60 day notification before mass layoffs. Law states if > 500 laid off in 90 day period, it triggers WARN.

Why should you care? Because other oil companies that laid off people were required to pay 8 weeks above and beyond their severance packages. I know, because I collected it on previous layoff.

Google WARN and find out for yourself!

Everyone better be brushing up their resume and making a long list of contact names with their phone numbers, addresses and email. Download Whitepages by Facilty Code and exporting it to Excel. Backup your hard work to a thumb drive (Excel files, PowerPoint presentations, manuals, etc). You may need to show your next employer samples of your work during an interview. Backup then delete your personal files and delete all personal and low impact emails. Start shredding your old paperwork left in your cubicle file drawers all these years. You get the point...

I think they were accurate in saying 500 will be cut in San Ramon. Richmond is already lean from the Downstream cuts five years ago.

I'm thinking there was a miscommunication. When they say 500 San Ramon employees, I think they meant bay area employees (San Ramon, Richmond and so on).
