That's been going on in the Lafayette office for the past year or so-- except a couple of geologists rather than admin people have been asked to do it.

In GOM, it is the culture to 'watch'. I've even been told by my supervisor that people are watching all the time. The cubicle system allows constant monitoring along with security, badge swiping, software programs etc.

Its like a f*cking concentration camp.

Anon 129973,... it appears that you and I share the ol' Don Quixote syndrome. I admire your willingness to do "what's right" by reporting your boss, but cringe at the most probable outcome, since a similar thing happened to me. I took issue with my blatantly incompetent supervisor (at CPChem,... she's probably still there, sucking the life-blood from all within the range of her sneezing fits). I was not the ONLY person making my concerns known,... it was common knowledge on our entire floor of the building that the person in question was "gone" more than she was "at work", and when she was at work, she was disgustingly inept. But, shit happens, and she turned out to be "connected" within the organization and ended up claiming "hostile work environment" against me and several others. Guess who won THAT round? Oh,... the supervisor of whom I speak, is ex Chevron, where her father was a manager (might explain some of this), and now, her son is also employed. I sincerely hope YOUR situation turns out differently than mine, although I'm quite happy and comfortable, now,... but, to sit by and watch truly incompetent and/or amoral people continue to "get along" within an organization that continually beats it's chest about everything from Safety to Family Values, is occasionally (to quote Doc Holiday, in Tombstone) "more hypocrisy than I can bear". Good luck to you all, nonetheless.

The decisions are already made. I reported a manager for having an affair with a direct report on his desk after hours....classy eh?. He is still in his position so I know I am getting whacked...pay back time. I come in when I please and say EXACTLY WHAT I WANT :-).

No, the manager would simply have a badge report run if they wanted to see if anyone wasn't putting their time in. That almighty badge does more than just track keystrokes!

No, I don't think a manager would rely on their admins to rat out other workers. On the other hand if I was an admin and my boss asked me to this low-down task, I would tell all the employees on my floor that my boss is a TERD.
