Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

Why don't they offer to let people raise their hand to leave but give them the severance?

Aw come on?! There are so many of us who just want to retire but would miss out on the juicy severance payment, so we wait and stay in our jobs for a little longer. Why not just have a voluntary program like ALL THE OTHER COMPANIES DO instead of pretending that all employees want to stay? "It's our time."

This is silly. My boss has to pretend there is no real voluntary program, while I whisper to her that I might actually want to kinda go. Lots of pretending. When is this company going to grow up.

Just mention you are hanging around and already mentally checked out and someone will gladly help remove that burden from you.

One factor, be it small, is the costs associated with the departure of employees with tenure with the company. The company must have the cash on hand to pay the severance packages. But do not hesitate to indicate a desire to depart the company via the severance package to immediate supervisor and the HR business partner.

I think some BU went this route. I was poking around the infrequently updated COST website, and followed a link to one of the Norway postings. From what I saw, it looked like Norway accepted volunteers.
