Severance + Payroll

I'm wondering if you get the severance in addition to them keeping you on payroll for six weeks?

Project Alpha isn't for SASBU. SASBU's layoff project is called Transform.

Severance is a lump sum payment and then you are off of payroll and unemployed, thus eligible for unemployment.

How would a person be able to collect unemployment while receiving a severance check ?

SASBU is doing ROM but they're also doing something called Project Alpha, a restructuring to reduce a bunch of rotational and contract positions and centralize as much as possible in Luanda. Houston SASBU jobs are being moved to Luanda, and depending on the specific situation a person might be able to move to Luanda with his/her job or might end up posting in the current ROM. Anyone "left standing" after the ROM, ie not chosen for any position, will almost certainly be terminated regardless of PMP history. Same goes for expats currently rotating to Malongo. Some of them are being offered the chance to move with their job to be resident in Luanda and some are getting tossed in the ROM. Also nobody over 57 or under 30 is allowed to post for any expat position in Angola; apparently this has long been a requirement by the Angolan government but CVX has finally started to comply. SASBU is participating in the current ROM with ETC and Chevron Shipping, so there will be plenty of people who either can't compete for a job at all or will be forced to take a bad job. I haven't heard whether SASBU is also doing RAE to cull the low-rated performers, all I heard about was ROM combined with the restructuring.

Yes, some are correct. There are several things going on. One is ROM and the other is RAE and/or RIF in some SBUs. The 60 days is a result of the WARN Act. The 6 weeks or 60 days is no longer in the office. It is spent with Lee Hecht Harrison or one of those other groups that CVX likes to employ. They are pretty useless. File for unemployment immediately after you last day. You will get your vacation balance check quickly in 1 one week or so but your severance will be 2-3 pay periods (either cut on the 7th or 22nd) from the time you send your paper work back in. They are slow on the severance pay outs.

Anonymous 134293 has it correct.

Redeployment is for people left standing after the ROM, not for performance based RAE-offs. The 60 days is to comply with WARN due to number of people being fired.

Or realize there are different layoffs going on. GOM, SJV, and MCBU are doing RAE, and may not be doing it exactly the same. Not sure about DWEP. SASBU and others are doing something else, I forget the name. The "support" BUs are doing a ROM which allows for rounds of job selections, i.e. 50 people trying to fill 25 open positions. Of course there's already games being played with quite a few positions being closed. It looks like to me some MCP PMs had some free time and needed something else to screw up.

I think some of you need to pay more attention the next time HR holds a meeting.

The amount of incorrect info is mind boggling.

Or, news flash, check the ROM website for some facts?

Correct. The severance payout will be paid in a lump sum after the 60 days (redeployment period) runs out. You will first be sent a letter and "severance contract" from Chevron Legal about 7-10 days after termination. You have 6 weeks to study it and even get legal advise, before signing and sending it back. You can do this as soon as you get it if you like. Once Chevron gets your signed severance papers back, they will process it for payment. You can expect this process to take from 3-5 weeks before getting a check in the U.S. Mail.

They can't not give people their severance that they have accrued. I would think that you get that as a lump sum after the deployment period.

Either way 60 days on the payroll is better than 6 weeks. Look at it as a redeployment period, if not internally in Chevron, then somewhere else. Working for a competitor and kicking Chevron's ass will be good karma.

No you cannot get both.

I wasn't given a copy but I'm pretty sure my BU said 6 weeks but there are laws that require 60 days notice. Guess I'll find out tomorrow.

DWEP also said 60 days

"You will receive 60 days advance notice of your final day on payroll." Meaning you will be terminate some day this week (10/8) and be on payroll for 60 days.

That's what our letter said at SJV. There was no mention of redeployment or of 6 weeks. What BU is doing that?

You may be correct in what you've been told from your HRBP. Last year when I when by BU went through a ROM, we got the 6 weeks redeployment period but were expected to show up in the office. It's very possible with the RAEs and the greater number of folks getting cut, that the rules have changed. Either way it goes, you will get paid for 6 weeks before your are terminated and given the severance program with all the frills. Ride it to the hilt and take advantage of everything you are offered.

I got a slightly different slant on the redeployment from my ever so helpful HRBP, who said I would NOT be in the office for the redeployment period, but would have access to a 3rd party employment services agency. Having all of us ROM/RAE victims hanging around, showing up at 10, leaving at 3, spending our days at Starbucks, the cafeteria or the fitness center might just be bad for morale....

Yes, you will get your severance check AFTER your 6 week redeployment period is over. You will also be able to apply for unemployment benefits and continue your medical insurance coverage under the same employee rates AFTER you leave the company. Keep in mind... The 6-week redeployment period (if offered to you) means you will still need to show up for work, but you can spend all the time you need to work on your resume and network to find any work that might pop up in the company. As I understand it, the company will pay for your access to a third party employment services agency during the 6 week redeployment period.
