Thread regarding National Oilwell Varco Inc. layoffs

What about the GAVPs?

What purpose do these people serve? High salaries but not much else. A glorified role really. Maybe they do stuff but I have never seen it. If they are not needed, save the people who are. Does every group need so many?

The only thing worse than the GAVP is their bosses. Those guys are egotistical and narcassistic jerks. Promoted based on who they know rather than what they know. Incompetence is the key word here.

Harry, you have no idea what you are talking about. The GAVP's have lunches that are thousands of dollars regularly and take clients out to dinner that run in the tens of thousands. They do travel and quite a lot and when they do you or I could spend a week in Europe for about $5,000 including air fare and they spend over 10K on just the flight. The GAVP's have the highest expenses of anyone not on in a C-Suite in the entire company. GAVP's don't write reports either, they hire people to do that for them.

What GAVP's do real well is get in the way of the salesman who have built relationships with Engineers, Rig Managers, etc. but because the GAVP has to feed their giant ego and feel relevant so they interject themselves regularly into these situations and completely screw up a perfectly good deal for the customer and NOV.

It is not the GAVPs that are really the ultimate problem. Check out their immediate bosses. They are the ones doing the endless first class travelling from country to country and not just to meet clients but for internal meetings that can be conducted via skype. Is this a good use of company money in this industry? They are the ones blowing the company budget and developing the big egos. GAVPs don't travel. They write reports. They are the minions of their bosses.

One of the comments I read in another thread someone said, "it's not what you know, it's who you know." That is a half-truth.

Must be nice to have a big salary and not have to do work. Some of us have worked hard and lost our jobs. Maybe hard work does not pay off if those GAVPs are any indicator.

BigEgosRule, Oh I hear ya!!! Even the lower level (management), especially the incompetent one have BIG EGOS, unnecessary huge salaries and BIG bonuses. They are all across NOV, especially at Parkwood 1. At least where you are they try to drum up business. Management (most) at PW 1 spend the entire morning talking about food, sports, their hobbies, money and what they want to eat, where they will eat, then go around bothering others about going to lunch....once they come back from lunch, they spend hours talking about what they had for lunch, who they had lunch with and what was said at the "round table." For the remainder of the day.....gossiping and spreading rumors. This is pretty much a daily routine.

They are the global account vice presidents in each big group. Our group has like seven I think.Think they do the same thing as the sales staff in each company and try to drum up business. Not much value to the role as most companies are capable of doing these things themselves. Basically report writers and meeting people. Get into everyone's business and think they know more. Some group heads see no value in them but they remain. Big salaries and big egos.....only bigger egos are those found in their boss. Haha! Lots of jobs could be saved by their demise.
