No just saying it's better to get laid off at the beginning of the year so you don't have the tax impact . If they waited until January it would bet better .

You're being way too optimistic. I've heard 1 week per year with a cap at some point so laying off the over-paid geezers who've been there for decades isn't prohibitively expensive.

Volunteer at your own risk. It will mark you from that point onward. Say goodbye to decent review ratings, bonuses, and RSU grants. Only volunteer if you're ready and willing to quit without being laid off if you don't make it into the list. It may be too late at this point anyway.

Some people... They think it sucks to get a lot of money and then have to pay a lot of taxes.

Would you rather get less money and pay less taxes?

Only thing that sucks is you get all that money lump sum at the end of the year and if you have worked more than 10 years it is going to impact your taxes so be prepared. Also make sure they withhold your 401k properly from the severance payment. They screwed up a friend of mine and instead of putting in 15 percent they only put in few hundred dollars. Gotta watch them like. A hawk especially if they are processing a lot of them at the same time. And yes you are eligible for unemployment immediately after the lAst day of work.

I think the 2+ 2 is true because I'm hearing it from multiple sources. That takes you well into February of next year, which is a nice thing considering you won't really be able to find a new job in November,December, and beginning of January, when everyone is still out on vacation.

There is 2 months of continued employment (Sep to Nov), and 2 months severance?

Also, can you get unemployment if you volunteer?

You can nominate yourself for termination if you want to. You have to contact your manager and HR representative and it'll be taken into consideration. It's just not guaranteed.

Oh right, unemployment benefits after the 60 days, pockets filled with severance pay, Obama paying for my health care. I'm grabbing my bongos and heading down to Ocean Beach.

You forgot eligible for unemployment.

The working may envy the unemployed.

Next year if history repeats, I bet it won't be so fat.
