Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Q Layoff - I heard that there might a healthcare bundling in the layoff package. My wife is pregnant and the due date is around the layoff time.

Can anybody provide any color re: the following - if I do get laid off in November'15, is it still possible to continue on the same healthcare plan? Or is it just that Q will add some money to the package to take care of any healthcare premium available in the market. I really don't want my wife to make last minute changes w.r.t which doctor she is seeing and the hospital where our baby will be delivered.

Any insights will be much appreciated.

I've heard numbers of $800 - $1600 for the health benefit payout, depending on seniority. Obviously Uncle Sam will take 45%, but if you're leaving the country, which me and my colleagues probably are, you can spend it on anything. For those wishing that the health benefit will pay for multiple months of insurance premiums, that's wishful thinking unfortunately.

Maybe it's because people don't think straight when they're anxious.

Why do people keep asking these stupid questions that are already answered in the realignment FAQ?

@ 135297: You can't necessarily assume that just because you pay for a higher level of Obama Care that it is better than an employer provided health care plan. You have to request/download copies of the Plans for each insurer. (They're about 80-100+ pp. long, depending on whether they contain the "carve outs" such as pharmacy benefits, vision, dental.) You have to also consider whether or not the Plan covers your wife's--and your--chosen physicians and specialists. Not all Plan physicians will be transferable to Obama Care. The Plans--including COBRA-- are also subject to change at the end of this year--which means you may want to keep COBRA until Dec. 31, but register for something else afterward. Your COBRA for 2016 will be the same as what QCOM is offering the remaining employees. All I can say is do you homework. You and your wife should figure out where she would like to recieve pre-natal and post-natal care, and what hospital she would prefer to use for the deliver. Then find out which plans will cover that, and compare them to COBRA

how about buying separate insurance for your wife from private market until she's given birth? 14hours/day? that's 3640 hours/year. Take your current salary and divide that by 3640 then multiply the result with 2080-hour regular pay.. is it worth it? crazyyy.. you'll actually be making around $40/hr..

I am assuming that 'tapeout' is a metaphor for the 'delivery date'. Unfortunately, it's not in my hands. And I would rather have a healthy baby vs. changing timing due to this layoff situation. Don't want to digress, but after all the hard work and 14 hour work days that I have given to Q - they could have created a provision for such situations and delaying layoff for those individuals by a couple of months.

Is there any chance you could delay the tapeout?

Our HR is on vacation for the next 2 weeks. But it's on my laundry list of questions once she comes back.

I'd find someone in HR on this, it's a valid question as layoffs have been announced and you are uncertain on what's going to happen.

I'd look into ObamaCare options as well. If you go with a high end plan it may be somewhat pricey but will beat COBRA in terms of quality

So I checked our internal website and it says that individual +1 is a certain amount (lower) and individual +2 is a higher amount. So before my wife goes into labor, I should probably be on individual+1 plan and when the baby is born I should move to Individual +2 plan? Apologies for the spam, but just planning for all eventualities as my wife is panicking.

Thanks! Hopefully Q adds a few months of premiums in the package.

You can be in COBRA for up to 18 months after leaving QC, meaning you can keep your current insurance but paying $1.5K/month premium out of your pocket.
