Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Leave or stay

Non technical employee here of 11yrs, not in scope for alpha...got an offer elsewhere for about 10% higher base. Ride out this downturn as superiors keep saying it's cyclical or take offer to start fresh in a completely different industry? Obviously CIP and salary program will be small if any here for the foreseeable future, but we do have 980s, 4wks vacation, pension, and the time to take 3 hr dumps....decisions. anybody out there flourishing after making a similar decision??

Please post how they respond because i would be floored if they would do anything that would be considered an exception for anyone. And fyi, I'm non technical and was in a job at a different company working a 4/10 schedule before chevron. And a lot of companies offer paid time off vs separate sick and vacation so you don't have to go back to two weeks a year ( unless you are sick a lot). The only thing you may have to give up are the 3 hour dumps but that will save you from becoming brain dead like most people get who stay at chevron too long.

OP here, I agree with what some said about CVX and the combined benefits package being second to none...so I think I will give management a chance to match outside offer. Obviously I'll get the bs about "how dare you ask during Alpha" but figure I'll give CVX one last opportunity

If you are relatively younger and worked only 4-5 years out of school and ambitious, this is a good time to cut loose. Take your experience, get a professional degree and move into other fields that are less cyclical. The cyclical oil boom that we have experienced over past 15+ years is going to end and we will be entering a slow growth cycle now for the next 10-15 years. So career-wise it will be challenging. Doesn't mean you won't be able to make it but it won't be easy. Just ask some of the old-timers who worked in the industry between 1986-1996 how it was. Business will go on but opportunities will be scarce particularly in the conventional business.

The grass isn't always greener. Whatever sux about CVX will suck at other places too.

Don't count on Chevron to do the right thing. The top people knew what was coming, or they should have. They tap into all economic projections available. They knew greater production would mean lower prices for oil. The top people need to go! Call 1-800 get Chevron.

136341- you got it right.

I left over 10 years ago and have enjoyed the transparency and accountability..... And the rewards of ind oil cos.

The old saying against leaving for the sm cos was that you will encounter more risk at the sm cos...... Well I don't see that as a differential anymore.

Gl all and do not look back.

Leave. If non-technic, there is supposedly a new salary structure coming out that will hurt your earning potential at Chevron.

Anyone should get out if they have a reasonable opportunity.

5 years ago it would be a resounding NO WAY! Chevron was a totally different place then. The change in leadership over 10 years had an amazingly negative effect. Chevron was a conservative company and under this regime it spends to excess to gain production growth. We have promoted the ill equipped to take over the retired leaders roles and they have seen negative behaviors rewarded. I left 8 months ago by choice. I worked for Chevron for 11 years just like you. Your gut is screaming leave leave leave. Listen to your intuition and go. Chevron is going to be hurting even during the uptick. I really reflected on why I did not want to leave. It truly centered around the 3 hr dumps lol. Being truthful with myself, it was that I could just put minimal effort in and reap the financial benefits. It is embarrassing admission but true for me. I do work hard now and am part of a team that drives for excellence. The business goals are very transparent and we are always in the know. I look forward to each morning and I catch myself smiling like I did at Chevron (5 years ago), driving to work. I should have left 5 years ago on hindsight. These ROM's will be brutal and round two will be more brutal. We all think things are predictable but they are not in the long run. Life is a journey not a destination. My journey at Chevron was filled with stress and anxiety no matter how much I tried to quell those feelings. It was being surrounded by bullies, incompetence, laziness, ego driven, mean people. Find a road that has less potholes on your journey, life is to short to keep getting tripped up where we spend most of our time. God Speed! P.S. It takes no time at all to get back in the swing of the real world of being accountable for you and your results!

I honestly believe that all of the bitter people here would have said the same thing before getting their papers (I was one that got them). I haven't had anything bad to say about the company though and wish it wasn't the way it is. Chevron has been good to myself as well as my family for the past 8 years. I had other opportunities available to me during my time here but have turned them all down simply because I love the way Chevron has treated us.

I'm still on board (so far) and part of a functional group so a little bit different situation as far as ROM is concerned but still in the same boat as everyone else. I'm looking just to be safe (though no bites yet), but hope to stay with Chevron. I've got my gripes and concerns but for the greater part this company has been a blessing to me and my family. I'm gonna wait it out and hope to see a future with Chevron.
