So you are looking for work and you interview somewhere, maybe even a few places. Eventually you go through several meetings and all seems like things are finally going to turn around until... your new hope "verifies" your employment and your employer (EDMC - choose a brand) decides to bad mouth you in some way (wait, they aren't allowed to do that - yea, right). Your hope for a new start is gone, you are back to square one and you only pray the people who are so unethical and disreputable get theirs sooner rather than later. Now, you may have done a great job but in the end, if you've been an upright person who has "told it like it is" a few times, you will get screwed until those people are gone from the company. Too bad though, they are the type this company loves.

You don't use your manager's number. You use the main HR job verification line that bills the potential employer to find out your working dates and salary information.
If the employment check comes in on a bad day then you might get the brunt of it. (Addendum to my previous post)
EDMC might not give anything but dates but I can see the actual campuses doing something like this. There are good people that work there but I've seen increasing tension as the weeks go on, if the employment survey/check comes in on a bad day.
"...we should just give dates worked" - that is correct although when people are "just talking" they say much more. I think the original point was that the company has a very poor approach and many of the "leaders" are only that in name. I think the poster was correct but nothing will never be proven because those are things that are never documented by anyone, and for good reason. There is a lot of backstabbing and vengeful people in this company and I doubt anyone here would dispute that.

When I worked there, they told me that we were asked to give a reference for an employee, we should just give dates worked. NOTHING ELSE. Maybe they have changed their tune? I'm sure they have - the stock is down to .7!!! I think its time to buy about 100 shares. . . ooops that is too much to spend, doncha think?

They document everything so that they can cover themselves, so you need to do the same...ask your manager for email confirmation or documentation of EVERY one-on-one, EVERY disciplinary action...keep them on file and document them more meticulously than they do. If there are gaps in their documentation, or the documentation does not coincide or makes sense together to make a reasonable argument that you have been warned, not improved, and were fired, then you may have a case. Even if you don't have a "strong" case, if it makes it far enough down the pike the company may just settle with you to get you out of their hair. They have billion dollar lawsuits against them, so settling with you may be the easiest fix. But rest-assured that this process will distract and pain them while they try to tackle bigger things.
This might happen once in a great while, but it has to be the occasional exception which proves the rule. If someone gets blown out because of a bad reference then there are more problems than just prior employment. Normally a negative comment will be confined to something like "not eligible for re-hire." However, if you can prove the existence of a bad reference with malicious intent, you have an excellent lawsuit- there are reputable employment attorneys out there just drooling to take a case like this. It sounds like, if you were in this situation, you may have had some indication that this was done to you, or to someone else. There's your starting point- begin documenting. This is good advice for everyone who suspects that their job could be on the line. You should be keeping copies of everything- every communication, email, diary notes of verbal communications, everything. This will help an attorney laser in on specific materials to ask for during the discovery process. If you suspect any discrimination of any kind, this documentation will help you get an attorney willing to take the gamble on a suit.

I hate to shit on your conspiracy theory, but edmc will NOT disparage you to future employers doing checks...in-fact, they won't say anything besides if you worked there or not, when you started and when you left. You know how many people are in and out of there every single week? You think they have time to talk shit on past employees, or that you were even important enough that they remember you? They don't even contest unemployment, even in the ugliest of separations. Let's stick to talking about the real, truly messed up things that this company does (which there are a many) rather than make shit up. Feel safe interviewing for new jobs everyone (and get started sooner than later).
Having big dreams, wanting to believe you matter, hoping that someone would come along and act in an ethical way, the same way they teach in business schools, really has very little in common with our employer's (EDMC) dreams. They only want money, we want to be valuable. We can do our best to find the overlap, but it's the side signing the paychecks that gets the final say. Somehow they will even justify their insensitivity even after they say, if you don't like it then you should leave.
