Thread regarding Education Management Corporation layoffs

EDMC is the Donald Trump of Education!

Just saying. They both brag a lot, total denial at every turn and every fact that is put of front of them and both billionaire companies failing spectacularly in the public eye. Oh, and everyone hates them. Good By.

@949 I agree with the first part of your statement but I think when it comes to the students the idea of enrolling in school just to get out a stipend is a little over the top. It's not that much I hear and getting into debt to the tune of 100,000 or even half that is not worth the few spending dollars they might get up front. I think the reality is most of the students there didn't have anywhere else to go that would take them, because they really were not college material in the first place. What EDMC did was take these people and say "oh, maybe you are creative' and invented The Art Instate. This of coarse is a slap in the face to real artist who attend real art schools. They go through religious selection process and are selected based on talent, drive and outstanding portfolio. 2/3rds of the applicants never make it into these schools. Ai was at the extreme other end. "dont worry, we will make you a creative" mentality. You dont need talent, good grades, a portfolio and motivation. " You dont need to go to those highfalutin art schools", just qualify for a student loan and your in.

For 514 - you hit he nail on the head! Good job! Ever since EDMC was made aware of the possibility of Gainful Employment, the Kool-Aid has been spiked with rhetoric about "our students" and how much the company as a whole is on a mission to "help" our students succeed, blah, blah, blah, blah. This lovely, caring and compassionate buzz spread quickly from the top down. If this "mission" .were sincere, it would be wonderful to be an employee at EDMC. The problem is, the students only became their top priority after GE was introduced. Before GE, when EDMC was literally rolling in billions of dollars, employees never heard any member of management ANYWHERE having compassion for students. In fact, the customer service was nonexistent and no one even thought to try and save an at risk student. When the company got hit with the reality of GE and simultaneously started losing students (or money, which is the real reason) suddenly we were on a mission to "save our poor, needy, mistreated students"! Those people who worked at the college because they truly loved the students and had a strong desire to help them were essentially slapped on the hands because our mission at that time was to enroll as many students as possible- month, after month, after month. I could literally write a book with my experience at EDMC, so I will get off my soapbox. My last thought is this: It is no secret that a large majority of students only enroll in college so they can drain their financial aid quickly. College to these students isn't college at all- it is just another way to take advantage of the loopholes in the financial aid program. As soon as they drain their accounts of all stipends, for "living expenses" they are out of the college with no intention of ever paying back the money. In my experience, the students who we root for and go to the ends of the Earth to help are the real victims here, but it is a shame that those who are not sincere about getting an education are the majority.

Trump has bankrupted his companies 4 times and still brags about what a success he is. Sure, you screwed over all the people you owe money too. EDMC is on track to do the same. Only they will spin it as being more responsive the the economic needs of their students. LOL Which of course didn't cross their mind before they got into financial trouble.
