Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Why did this even happen? Pointers for the board members, top management and HR!

Why did Qualcomm hire so many engineers without harder scrutiny and questioning the managers if they really need it, who were in the race of increasing their empire without thinking about the company? Why was there in first place motivation for these managers to hire more people...just so that they climb up the organization ladder faster? Was there no way of making (motivating) them think about the company before thinking about themselves? Now we have 4 engineers to 1 engineer doing same job in competitor company. And now we complain about margins?

Why didn't Qualcomm have a policy of 1% layoffs every year? Every successful organization including Intel, MSFT, AMZN and others have the policy to shed the 1% employees every year as a annual process. This wouldnt have gotten us to this stage where we have so many people just sitting up on their a**es and doing nothing!

Why doesn't Qualcomm start layoffs from top to bottom? Usually in these cuts the ones to lose their jobs are junior engineers. They hardly contribute to the Op-ex. Start from the execs. Did anyone in management even think of counting how many directors, Sr. directors and VPs Qualcomm has? A VP in Qualcomm translates to less than director in Google...What does it say about our hierarchy? Shed the people from the top of the org chart first!

Why are most of our top management from inside of the company and not hired from externally? The only way to stop spreading the internal infection now is to get an external medication. This about how fresh ideas and new perspectives coming from outside of the organization will make these directors/sr. directors/VPs re-think their strategies!

I hope someone in HR/top management/board member sees this. We cant have same policies if we need to compete with ruthless asian companies who care less for quality and more for price.

Sorry to be the upper with all the downers here. The team I'm on has ton's of interesting work. The leads are great, they mentor and the expectation is high. The interns have great work and mentoring is highly encouraged, but perhaps that is because we are not in SD. Usually when we ask SD to do work, it takes 5x longer due to the silly processes and other crap that has been put in place to keep real engineers from doing their jobs

@906, I know what you mean. Joined in 97 out of school in SD, left in 04. Rejoined in 07 in the Bay Area and left in 12. Had enough of giant companies. Particularly in the Bay are, the benefits and perks in smaller companies are similarly good and your job is in fact more secure since at very senior levels of engineering you are responsible for much bigger scope of responsibility...

Dude. When I started the Q u had a bullshit job too. I had to leave and come back to get a better job. And looks like I have to leave again. If you aren't aggressive enough, you are better leaving. You won't go grow without knowing how to play the game.

112858 brings up something I've noticed. Unless you are motivated enough to educate yourself, your skills will stagnate at QC and you will be SoL if you lose your job.

"Why did Qualcomm hire so many engineers without harder scrutiny and questioning the managers" - They did not do that.

"Why was there in first place motivation for these managers to hire more people" - new wasteful projects.

"Now we have 4 engineers to 1 engineer doing same job in competitor company" - This is incorrect.

"Why didn't Qualcomm have a policy of 1% layoffs every year?"- The performance based layoffs is more than 1% a year, just not an official policy.

"Intel, MSFT, AMZN and others have the policy to shed the 1% employees every year as a annual process" - Not correct

It takes a village to provide scoping to program manager for effort required to setup meeting to look into customer request. We're short staffed

Yeah. The new kids were trapped to work for qualcomm. I know few kids in my team. They are from top ranked schools like Berkeley, NCSU, upenn. During DQ event they had a stay at Omni hotel and lavish dinner parties. They were really lured to join the team. Now what they do frigging running scripts and analyzing data. Poor chaps. Now they are 2 yrs experienced and don't know shit to join other company.
