Finally this made the news. I was there and found another job after the Typhoon. Thousands were forced to sleep in category 2 shelters when a category 3 typhoon was on its way. There was not adequate space so I slept in a hall way and we had to relieve ourselves in 5 gallon buckets. Chevron did not want to evacuate 4,000 people the cost was to hi. I sat in the meetings when this was discussed. I could no longer in good faith stay with Chevron. Believe me I am no person on some righteous campaign. But the tings that I saw were just to much to accept.
This project is far from being complete. You are correct in stating shale gas is the final nail in the coffin. There is a LNG terminal in Maryland that will start transporting cheap gas from Pennsylvania in a year. As we struggled through the Chevron incompetence of leadership Gorgon's long term gas contracts left to go to Dominian Gas that runs the Maryland terminal. Chevron has a BU in Pennsylvania and could profit from this transition but EVERYONE in the know relays that Chevron has failed at shale gas. In a recent discussion it was noted that Chevron is DEAD LAST in KPI benchmarking for shale gas in the Pennsylvania BU.
I still can't figure out how a company can be in such a tight death spiral.
This is probably the most mismanaged American project in history. There is a reason the project cost has doubled. A few of us know. I'd like to see management defend the decision to continue, accepting massive future overruns, after knowing of said mistake.
