Chevron looking at getting rid of ETC business model.

BCG is pushing for the dismantling of ETC. They point to the high cost of getting zero results. They also are questioning core competencies. The theme is why pay a premium for the work of non subject matter experts with no results or worse yet bad results. I hear my leaders say do not worry about BCG opinion. But others that I do trust have indicated that the senior leadership follows BCG's plan without question.

The timeline is not this ROM during project Alpha but is over a 6 month to 1 year business plan.

Yes indeed, BCG is proposing that ETC is just as the above said, an academia solution when real working solutions need to be thought out and implemented. Across the entire enterprise ETC did not give the BU's a final deliverable 50% of the time within the first year????? Could that be true????? They also cited very little or no mentoring for employees entering new assignments. I personally think its a great idea to mix mid, up and down stream but you have to have some sort of leadership plan to get competencies to the level needed. I do not plain the poor guy that takes a job to feed his family and pay the mortgage to only sit at a desk with no clue.

Exactly, I mean how hard would it be to have the employees embedded in the BU until competencies were learned????

i heard it is not good to have too high, say 90% of billable hours in ETC. Is this true? if yes, ETC really has a funny model. It asks people to have >72% billable hours.. but also say higher % does not mean you are better than others...

The problem with ETC is they operate like academicians chasing the next grant or trending topic. Chevron is a business not a research university. R&D that leads to real-world business solutions is valuable. Unfortunately, many in ETC lack an experienced understanding of what BU practioners actually do in real-time with real budgetary constraints. Fit-for-purpose is not in the ETC vocabulary. Lacking that understanding and a corresponding desire to gain such experience, it is not surprising that value has not been fully realized. Embedd ETC personnel in BU's for a rotation or two before expecting them to produce business solutions.

There are things about the ETC business model that could stand to be changed. Some of the work done there could probably be better handled in the BUs. IMO, ETC should really focus on specialty stuff that can't realistically be done in the BUs. If what is really meant by the original poster is a reorganization like separating upstream from downstream - impossible to tell from the generalizations and buzzwords - then I don't care that much. It doesn't concern me who someone several layers above me reports to. What matters to me is if I still have an income. I imagine most people feel the same.

Bad news for the few hard working folks in ETC. The 80/20 rule definitely applies in ETC. Maybe even 95/5. Above poster is correct. Too many times my incompetent cohorts supply our BUs low quality, poorly thought out work. I actually cannot believe some of the stuff they pass off as polished work. Hope I can still have a decent job if we displace 3,000+ people.

We really only need about 500-750 people. We were at 1,000 before 2008.
