Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Please remember

Two years ago, when money was a flush, all of you were singing songs about how great Chevron was. Look at you today, it takes a medium size RIF to turn everything upside down. What happened with the 'best place to work', what happened with each of us being 'special', our unique position in the marketplace, all the perks and bonuses. All of that is forgoten now and Cheveron is such a 'bad employer' and 'horrible company' to work at. Just my 2 cents.

What happened, the Chevron Way became “Microsoft’s Way. “Always time to do it right” is now “Minimum viable product”. Nothing more really needs to be said!

Anonymous114629 you nailed it. I was blown away at exactly what you have said. People just don't show up and its blatant. And yes they will probably stay.....do nothing=make no enemies. I expect the very qualified hard working people who challenged the system for the betterment of Chevron to get fired. I would be surprised if they don't.

I would like to know who says it is the best place to work - probably a lazy ass cvx lifer. I work in a dept. where the admin comes to work at 10 leaves at 4:15 since her boss leaves at 4:00. Takes every other friday off because she is "working" 9/80. We have a business analyst PSG 25 mind you who works only when her boss is in town. If her boss is on vacation or travel, she never shows up for work. We had a PE who did nothing for 3 years and retired finally. If he was asked to do anything, he would moan and complain and make everyone's life miserable - a chevron lifer. Yes it is a great place to work - since most of the people who say that will not survive anywhere else. No other company has this much dead wood. I am sure when it comes time to lay off these people will survive.

My boss, a Unit Manager, once commented that "Chevron tolerates its employees"! First I thought that comment was a little too harsh but over the last two or three years I've come to realize that he is absolutely correct! Absolutely!

I like how the gods posted on our intranet homepage just 3 days ago a blurb touting we are ranked 3rd in best places to work among Fortune 500 companies, with a No. 1 ranking in employee satisfaction.

Yes, I am in agreement with Anon 114031. Fatalities brushed aside ("it was only a contractor!"), suicides, breakdowns at work ("call security and get him/her out of here!") and rapidly multiplying filings of disability claims ('they can't fire me if I'm on LTD!") are becoming the true We Lead behaviors. Chevron is an inbred organization, with no outside influences in management or board members. And, management has been quietly dumping Chevron stock for months, knowing it's a lost cause.

But hey, look at our "award winning" programs! Look at our puppet management team! Look at the empty desks everywhere!

Another reader mentioned that Chevron employees are screwed in a major way because everyone else has taken the last few jobs at other firms. Truth.

I think this is true to some extent. Being a new employee I believed the Chevron Way that was held as the truth. That Chevron puts people and the environment first. There is these glossy pamphlets and management keeps repeating it, Then you start to see cracks in the system. Cracks soon turn to seeing that there was no Chevron way. This was during good times. That a fatality is dismissed. That environmental insult is explained away that you can not question bad decisions. That was 4 uears ago durinfg good times. Then these behaviors are magnified 1000% during the down turn. I do think people wanted to believe the Chevron Way. And it is hard to say otherwise as we can dismiss many things to push away the tuth.

With all the assumptions in your post, I'd say your opinion is more like 1 cent ... make that 1 Canadian cent
