Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Massive Depression - Can't Concentrate

I'm in a downward spiral of depression. I can't function in an environment where layoffs are the only thing on my mind. I regret going into hardware feeling like it wasn't worth the effort. Poof. It's gone. You're worth nothing. F***. This sucks.

Just slow down like every body else, think about yourself and make a plan, do exercise and go home on time. Let the company suffer, they don't care for you what should we? Is a sinking boat and this is just the beginning....prepare, be ready and move along. Your experience is something no one will take from you!!!

I learned this the hard way. Engineering by itself do it only because you like it, not because you plan on retiring from it well off. Learn how to manage your money and do something with it. Because you want your money to work for you when you can't/don't want to.

OP,

Yes this situation might sound depressing and nothing to look forward for. If you consider that you worked hard and sacrificed quality time with family , this type of feeling still goes up.

So what can we do? Tell yourself "Even this will pass away". So treat this situation as a time to make yourself strong. Donot get into negative spiral of thinking, arrest that thought process and hope for the best. If you believe in God go to your pastor or priest and talk to them. There is hope and that's one thing we should refuse to give up. World may snatch anything from you , but not your choice to HOPE ; That is in your control. So use that and tell yourself again and again that it will get better. Read positive psychology books especially from hayhouse.com or from other positive websites.

Talk to well meaning friends and positive guys around you and keep that spirit alive. Buddy, you can get through this

you are right in one sense, but whether we're curing cancer or designing doorbells most of us want to feel good about what we do or did. Sure it is about as important as how many angels can dance on the head of of a pin but I wanted to think that what I did helped in some way. Call me stupid!

When you die this little speedbump will be beyond meaningless. Your job is actually meaningless, I mean we aren't curing cancer or solving poverty, we are making chips that only the top 1-2% of people worldwide could afford. It's not a glamorous job, it's nothing compared to a lot menial jobs even (nursing, firefighting, etc etc). You are taking your career way too seriously, I'd suggest quitting right tbh if you really feel like this, not worth it, downshift into something you can deal with.

I'm in the same boat; still very angry at the pigs at the trough who crafted this mess, amazed that a fine company could be turned into a steaming pile of s$hit in a few years...but most of all guilty that I put this place ahead of my family and health just to make a few a&&holes rich(er). if I interviewed you and talked QC up as a good place for engineers, forgive me.

I understand why you may feel like that. Yet, please try to put things into a realistic perspective please (I am an EE major / HW guy too and have to do this from time to time). Think about all vocations that are out there – and then think about things that they do. There is very little glamour in any other vocation, most of them involve repetition, cookie cutter approaches, etc. There is a few of them that are a bit more dynamic but they are offer very low pay/security or have super high barriers to entry. When you put things into perspective a HW engineer is pretty high on the totem pole of vocations, there will be folks above you but think in terms of marketing folks (yikes), attorneys (crazy long hours and extreme stress), actuary specialists (just shoot me), teachers (cannot support family), business folks (ultimate backstabbing and unpredictability), accountants (can it get worse than that), baristas (try to wash the floors every night on a $10/hr), doctors (it’s a zoo with super nuts hours), nurses (grunt work for doctors), etc. I mean, every vocation has pros and cons, but realistically, a HW eng gig still beats pretty much all of them. Now, QC is messed up and it might be time for you to move on, but think about your skills, your ability to logically reason (not a common trait among humans, most EE folks are super strong here), etc. Also, follow the advice below, someone was talking about gym, etc. That will help you 1000%... Cheers buddy…

I feel the same. Been there for the past 2yr. Focussing on my family, hobbies and gym to get out from the downward spiral. Try this: go to the gym 30-60 min, and run at least 2miles. Take a shower and go to work. Knowing you did something for yourself already in the day makes you feel much better. Kill all negative thinking as it pops up. Yes, a HW job in Q in SD can be seen like a prison, but it depends how you look at it. It is useless to consume yourself with things you can't control if you are not ready to move. A job is a business contract, nothing else. But because you spend most of the time you'll ever have doing it, it better be worthwhile, right? Well, ask your friends and family: most jobs suck... badly. The one you have probably a lot less than most.

Best businessmen would view everything like a commodity. They would tell the engineers how good they were when they were needed, but there was never a moment that a businessmen viewed engineers as valuable members. It is up to the engineers to know their worth and never undersell themselves, and never give in to short term business gain. Your family is not a business, and so, why treat your livelihood like one.

I'm not even bothering looking for a job. Instead I'm going to work for myself. I'm doing with corporations. My only issue is I CAN'T WAIT to get laid off (because I want the whatever layoff package there may be + wages up until that point). Aside from pure money, it's an utter waste of my time to stay here. I've got better things to do.

In business, it's never advised to be one trick pony; instead always get a backup plan; in this case you could switch to software one step at a time.

EE is a profession and to some it is a passion. The problem is that business people that got into the field view it as a commodity. That is the reason why businessmen couldn’t succeed in high tech startup on their own, while pure techie people rarely could succeed in business. QC founders succeeded in bring up the technology, and the businessmen made it big. Now businessmen are in charge and EE guys are a commodity to be chopped.
