Conoco Expats Layoffs

My guess (for what that's worth) is that Ex-pats will stay put if their position is absolutely business critical (that's why you're there!). If not, look for many ex-pats to be repatriated due to the huge cost. The risk is that if you're position ISN'T business critical, and there's no room for your skill/experience set back home, you may be left standing when the music stops. As for Australia, ABU-East is still humming along and can't slow down until first delivery of the two LNG trains over the coming 6-12 months. I'd wager cuts there would be low. ABU-West may be another story, but I'm not familiar with their assets. Good luck to all!

Expats not in Management positions (SGL 19+) or having very unique skills will be sent home. That is a given. IF the company survives this situation (many companies WILL fail), expat assignments will be few and far between. The situation is far worse than anybody in Management believed to be possible.

define business critical... Odd language, ConocoPhillips. If a position is not business critical should it really exist?

It will be a suprise if they don't send back an expat who actually doesn't have business critical position in US support function but tried hard to stay in the US by making up story of business case , bluffing, kissing boss ass and doing dirty politic things like backstabbing other coworkers. So as to the company still needs his expertise and role in organization because no one else (US employees) is able to fix the problems . I don't see it as a positive way for COP, expats, US based employees. I feel sorry for the expats with the real qualified skill/expertise returned home without a job. Hope the best for all..
