I got a packet from fedex within a few days of being laid off also but the letter in it was only a sample letter, made clear by the word "sample" on the top left of the pages. It stated that the actual letter would not be sent until the day you were laid off so in our case October 17th the letter will go out for the severance package.

I got mine within 5 days of my last day in the office. Yes, it was fast. Chevron legal will sent it via FedEx. Someone must be home to sign for it, else they will attempt delivery again the next day. You can take up to 6 weeks to think about it or consult your lawyer, but the language is understandable enough for the layman. I recommend you sign it and send it back to them (1500 Louisiana Street address) via FedEx 2-day ground service. It is a $7.50 fate rate, and they will get it the following day. Make copies for yourself. Legal will process it upon receipt and you will get your severance check within 2 to 3 pay periods. The check will be dated on the 7th or 22nd and will be mailed to you via first class US Mail (go figure), so allow another 2 or 3 days to get it. On a separate note, file for unemployment the day after you are let go. You can do so online without having to go into a field office. Google for Texas Workforce Commision for info and to get your application for benefits. The max benefits paid is $465 per week or $1980 per month.
