Got a call from recruiter looking for contractors for Q-SD

Got a call from a recruiter, saying since QCOM FULL TIMERS lay off is very close, Q's hiring managers are looking to fill in the LAID OFF full timers with SEASONAL, PART TIME and CONTRACTOR workers. So where is the savings here ? All Q doing is converting the FULL TIME positions to PART TIME / CONTRACTING positions. Capitalism at BEST.

I have doubts about there being any contract positions hiring now in Qcom SD. If there was an opening, they would just ask a guy being laid off to stay on for another few months.

I don't think anyone in SD would take a SW/HW tech contact work for < $100/hr, unless they're just starting out. Contractors have zero (0) benefits, double SS taxes and a time certain end date. Not a good way of scraping together a living wage.

I got one myself and I asked who it was for. The Recruiter said Qualcomm. I had already left and told him that I wasn't interested. So yeah their feelings in the positions are laying off apparently. I can't say I'm terribly surprised but I can say that I'm very disappointed.

I got one of those calls for a contract position that sounded suspiciously like it was for the position at QCOM that I recently left! I let him go through the job requirements--which seemed like a perfect match--and then we talked price. Greedy dude wanted to pimp me out for $50 per hour for a 6-month temp job. Most corporations are willing to pay contractors at least 50% more than the salaried hourly wage, so I countered that if he wanted the expertise without the benefits he was going to have to pay at least $125/hr. He hung up, but some people are willing to pay it. So don't sell yourselves short. Especially if the job requires you to relocate, and the employer isn't paying for it.
