agree austin has much better s/w talent and is much more business friendly for corporations. SD is home of military and trust fund brats

Honestly there is little software talent in San Diego. Wireless modem expertise does not equate to good software coding skills. The Austin, Seattle and Boston metro areas are second choices for that behind the Bay Area. The companies you have mentioned - Apple and Google and also Facebook, Dropbox and LinkedIn have a large presence in Seattle and Austin and no presence in the San Diego area. Plus all of them with the possible exception of Seattle are cheaper than San Diego plus have much lower tax structures.

Makes sense for Google and Apple to open engineering offices in SD. Why don't they?

Most Bay Area companies - the giant ones especially are not interested in doing that. Rather have off site talent at the Texas sites like Austin.

161537: No. It's more of an issue where they may be able to save more money by opening an office in San Diego than by hiring moe H1-Bs. An engineer that would cost them $200,000 in salary and stock/bonuses would run about $150,000, here.

I'm thinking of accepting an offer from McDonalds as a cashier. Seems like a much more stable position and my work will be much more appreciated.

I got a pretty good offer from Google, but I do not want to move out of SD. I'll just wait for the next layoff and decide my next move.

I do not know if other folks are BS..ing

But I got an offer from Apple and have decided to stick with QCA. I work at QCA San Jose.

Apple base salaries and bonus for the high end of a senior engineer at the most is the same as that of a senior staff engineer with QCA SJO ( I am basing on what I see so far, realize that things will only go down). RSU is around 2X but from what I heard can be widely variable.

Apple does not negotiate at least at individual contributor levels in this market and if you are happy with the manageable honest 40 hour schedule that you can get away with at QCA, you might want to consider that.

Amazon offer was great.

Oh you are talking about the WSJ article? To be honest the SW engineer benefit even beats Q after Q downgarde the health benefit..

Anonymous161533, does Sunnyvale have an Applebee's yet? Such culture. So wow. Don't confuse the bay area with SF.

"Silicon Valley Cos need to start opening satellite offices in SD to tap into the talent here" - translation, Im too lazy to get up and move, so you come to me. What a lazy dumb shit.

"Who wants their worse than LA commute, horrible air quality, and ridiculous house prices over there? Do the math before you make the move. In SV, a non-smoker life expectancy is about the same as for a smoker in SD." - this is such utter BS. Quality of life in bay area far, far outstrips backwater place like SD. If you are a stupid surfs-up kinda dude, than SD is the place for you. If you want to work with the best tech talent, best companies, highest compensation, have the most opportunities, have 10x things to see and do on the weekends, than bay area is where its at. If you can't cut it, just stay in SD and tell yourself these lies until you have convinced yourself.
