Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

A Sinking Ship...

Until the recent downturn, COP was a pretty good place to work. The salaries and compensation were fantastic. Overall, the atmosphere was pretty good, the work was exciting, etc. The mood and atmosphere radically changed starting Q4 2014. The company is in very bad strategic, market, and financial situations. COPs workforce is intelligent, educated, and pretty high performing. The severance and retraining packages are pretty good. The way that I look at it, many COP employees are simply way better off being laid off, getting the severance package, and then getting a new job in 2-10 months. Being laid off sucks, don’t get me wrong. However, it also really sucks working in a really depressing work place. Realistically, I’d say that most COP employees can get pretty decent jobs elsewhere.

Those HR people can be, and have been, successfully outsourced! The COPC HR department is the least helpful and informed bunch of corporate welfare recipients in industry.

I think this post hit the nail on the head. The ones that leave will be mentally better off in a year.

Kind of like Titanic. Pretty good until it hits the iceberg (OPEC/the Saudis).

If this situation is in any way like 1986, the business won't even begin to come back for five or six years, and specialized people will be selling shoes until then. The ones who didn't suicide.

161938, what are talking about by technical people not getting jobs anywhere else. I just got an offer this week, I am actually hoping to get laid off before I resign.

Great post.. to summary COP future in three words... "haste makes waste"

they split to company in downstream/upstream in haste of making more money in good times... when competitors like Chevron, Exxon were smart to keep business safe and didnt split.... now COP is crying for help... ALPNG//Oilsands projects is in toilet with $45 barrel oil... if oil stay low for couple of years..next step will be to cut dividend and look for buyers

Anonymous161920, you must be some random HR person (because HR people can work everywhere)!

No body is hiring technical people (def: people with an actual degree) right now.

BTW, the excessive spending in conocophillips over the past few years is mostly the problem, not to mention the very bad strategic decision taking by the CEO and his team.
