Thread regarding Whole Foods Market Inc. layoffs

10 year TM, told my position is gone

I have been with Whole Foods Market for 10 years. I worked my way up to a buyer position. I was told my position no longer exists as of yesterday. I can take a pay cut and become a regular team member at $13 an hour. People start in at $11!!! 10 years and you can't even let me stick with my $14 that I earned through hard work? If I decide to stay with the company they cannot guarantee me a full time position. However I can take severance and they will allow me to work out 8 weeks and get my severance over that time to lower taxes on it. Thank you Whole Foods Market for being so kind after royally f** in the a$$.

I've been with Whole Fooods for over 10 years have held many different positions, 1 position I held was eliminated and I was laid off...knowing they lost someone who loved the company I was called back and asked to work for them again of course with an almost $10/hr pay cut! looks like after 5 years it's about to happen again..... Though they haven't said anything officially in my region yet.

Someone told me recently that whole foods was like Wal mart. I defended the company that I love. All of the bad press and "whole paycheck" monikers we weather because we loved the company we work for. Drank the Kool aid full heartedly because I saw the core values working and I worked the core values. I drank the kool aid. Now my mentors and the team I've built and the team I've grown to love have a decision to make that they shouldn't have to make. I'm saddened and disappointed by this decision. It's short sighted and foolish to push out the culture we've tried to build for so long. Quit opening stores. Quit hiring top paid corporate positions. Keep quality team members.

Nothing is happening in the Midwest at the moment. Crickets all around, we are structured differently however and already had cut back on demo specialists, our marketer is a community relations specialist, still 40 hour work week. Stores only have 1 artist. No Coffee Buyers, they condensed that as well as no official Bakery Buyers.

Same in FL region, no regional positions affected yet. They've actually been hiring more regional staff in the past month (probably in preparation for this).

What about regional offices? Lots of highly paid people there that are not essential to the day to day operations. Any news about lay offs there?

Just got told today that we are having a meeting this week, sounds like TL's, supervisors, buyers and team trainers. I think I know what to expect now.

laying off good people left and right. used to be the company that everyone wanted to be a part of and it was exciting to say I worked there. we weathered the "whole paycheck" jokes with grace and a sense of humor only to get "no paycheck."

As a manager in the NA region I really hope all these employees tell management to shove it. Its the only way to impact the business they want us to reapply for a lower wage, we must boycott, walkout, unionize something. No one is safe. Regional higher ups, management should see they are next as well.

It's a shame most TMs bought all the BS they've been told about unions all this time. Lets be clear the one thing unions can offer are a voice, we had no say in any of this and won't unless we unionize. From team leaders down, no one's job is safe.

You are so right!! Regional doesn't care at all nor are they restructuring those positions. I can see a buy out in the near future with all the new store openings in random, untapped markets.

It is a total disruption of the whole foods system. All the buyers and supervisors lost their jobs and have to reapply with half the positions available. Meanwhile, new stores open every day. New team members are hired in at $11/ hour with no experience. Whole Foods is pushing out all long term team members to bring in cheaper help with less benefits.

The leaders on the "you're fired" conference call made no mention of a restructuring of regional leadership. There are a lot of highly paid people in a think tank, thinking about how they can keep their money. Just keep opening stores, and keep fudging numbers to make things look better than they are.
