Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Qualcomm is dishonest about H1bs

Everyone on this board is blaiming H1bs. Don't you realize this a master plan by the MBAs and lawyers running the company? It's much cheaper to employee H1Bs then keeping US employees. This is illegal and being looked at now. Everyone should wake up and realize business is business but at the same time Q is taking any step needed to maximize profit. Capitalism is truly a disgusting and evil thing in this world. My 2 cents.

164612: First, Glass Door is only as reliable as the people who post on it. Considering the rate at which most of you exaggerate, I would guess that it isn't terribly reliable. Second, median salary at QCOM for Staff Eng. is roughly $130,000; and for Sr. Staff Eng. is about $150,000. (Employees over 40 are entitled to this information under OWPBA.) Third, H1-Bs can legally be paid about 5% less than the going rate, under the federal statutes, without violating laws. Fourth, I was brought on board specifically for my expertise in a particular area, so I made well above the median. Finally, if you make over $90,000 per year and are still using Turbo-Tax to do your taxes, you aren't as smart as you like to think, because you are losing money. Find a decent accountant.

Sorry smartie, glass door and other websites exist for salary comparison. Turbo tax publishes tax and income stats. I was in the top 2% in the country after 9 years with QC. With H1B. If you get paid peanuts its because of your skills and value to the company. The talk about cheap h1Bs is plain BS. Every place has its bright bulbs and din wits. Have seen both with H1Bs and non (Caucasian and born here , so I am guessing nonh1B)

The H1b bashing seems more like personal loser talk. I joined as an H1B from a top-10 school. 100k as senior. 120ish while reaching staff and 145 as sr staff. I am leaving next week for the Bay Area. If some of you really think that H1bs are here for low pay then wake up. Just blaming your own problems on others

surely there must be execs at the EVP/CEO level in foreign countries who can be brought into replace their American born CEOs, under H1-B or similar visa program for extraordinary leadership abilities. Perhaps this could help reduce the need for golden parachute pay packages, with an endless supply of foreign executive talent. Keep costs low, at every level of the org chart.

The way H1B works to benefit companies is not by providing cheap labor for the H1B employees (they get paid the same), but by having a much bigger supply of workers than what is demanded by companies - the overall cost of the workers go down.

@Capitalist, where is this capitalist system you speak so fondly of? US is cronyism and central bank bastardized version of free markets. I mean, how much work did they put in for the 4 trillion of "assets" they have? Where is price discovery in this market?

@ Capitalist Q-suck-up: If QCOM does not pay H1-Bs differently, why terminate well-qualified engineers who are citizens holding the same position? Don't tell me this isn't happening. I was RIF-ed from my position as a senior staff engineer--despite good reviews. Less than a week after putting my resume out there, I was immediately inundated with calls to apply for my former position for $35 per hr. Contract workers traditionally make more than salaried because they have to pay for their own insurance and any benefits.

OP is full of dog poo. As someone in management, I hired and managed engineers, both citizen and H1B. QCOM does not pay them any differently.

If you're unable to compete, I suggest you immigrate to a Communist country to get away from Capitalism. It's a horrible economic system. Who cares if it's lifted billions out of poverty. It creates inequality. Can't have that, right? Why should the smartest, hardest working people make so much more than welfare recipients? It's just not fair.

You guys are a bunch of pussies.

Qualcomm appears to be abusing the system like the bigger boys are doing. This recent layoff proves the point. Qualcomm still netted over 10 billion in 2 quarters.

if capitalism wasn't around to employ 12 year olds to make 18 cents per hour building iphones, those kids would have no money to feed their families! Capitalism lifts all boats!!!
