Thread regarding Whole Foods Market Inc. layoffs

We all saw it coming, but didn't want to believe it.

I've been with this company for years in different stores, in different regions, in different positions on different teams but I don't trust them any more. These layoffs, or restructuring as it's being called, did not just materialize over night. This is a decision that was thought out and put into action without a discussion within the store. I understand the business aspect and their reasons for doing so, but their decision to not be open and share the information with the stores, with the team members, was a huge mistake. If global had come forward, if regional had come forward, to discuss with each region the necessity for eliminating certain positions and redistributing the responsibilities then maybe there wouldn't be this panic. That's what this is - fear. Will I lose my job? My health insurance? My financial security? How will I pay my bills? Support my family? My mortgage? My student loans?

And do you know what happens when workers get scare about their job security? They start a union.

And I don't blame them. If someone had come to me several years ago and said, "We should unionize." I would have told them we didn't need one. That Whole Foods was a transparent company that valued its team member. We had health insurance, PWA cards, and paid next to nothing for it. We had PTO that was earned and rolled over, becoming more valuable the longer you stayed with the company. We had a structure of leadership that assured that your voice was heard, and your opinion mattered. This was the culture we used to have. We trusted this company to protect us, to look out for our best interest, to make sure we were taken care but that trust has been broken.

I worked at a store, an older store, and my foundation was shook when a TL was fired for "stealing" a cup of coffee before open but it was later revealed that they just wanted to get rid of her because she made too much money. As the years rolled on I have seen more and more frightening examples of this company I was so invested in, one I had defended and believed in, become yet another corporation that puts money first and its workers last. They stopped hiring full time so they didn't have to offer benefits. They pushed long time TMs harder and offered less compensation. When a TM would leave, they wouldn't replace they would simply redistribute the work load. They keep the same expectations but offer no solutions or assistance. How can they not see this as wrong? What investment does someone have when they come in twice a week? How can you have a cohesive team when they never see each other due to scarce scheduling?

The point that I'm trying to make is that even though I don't believe my job is in immediate danger, that doesn't mean I'm safe. No one is. I think we would all be a lot less scared if we have known change was coming. If they had kept us informed about the real issues within the company, whether it is just structural or financial or both. Instead they told us it was all going to be ok - That we're still opening stores! That moving up is the goal! Watch this wonderful video about our Core Values! WE are compassionate! WE care about more than ourselves! WE believe in bettering our community! But... what about your community of TMs? What about our value? Where is the compassion?

I'm sad and I'm scared. And if someone came to me and said I could make a little less money but I'd have job protection? I'd just ask where to sign.

I understand why I got laid off and I'm OK with it but I just wish they would have done this differently.

You killed the culture with this. Killed the motivation. Customer service wil suffer. Idgaf what these people need. Our customers are mainly rude, terrible people. It was hard to be nice to them before this. Now I'm just going to avoid them and not offer to help. If they need help they can ask or go shop elsewhere.

How dare you pretend the core values still matter.

How dare you pretend everything is okay.

Exciting new structure.

Unnessicary regional staff should have been evaluated. Ever think of why some regions are doing well where others aren't? Did you ever wonder what is going on at the regional level?

Favoritism, sexual favors, nepotism.... You want to pretend the company is heading in the right direction, but in reality you've got these crooked deceviers running the show.

Your beautiful, warm, good intended company is turning into every other bullshit corporate company. And I think you know that, but are putting on this front and playoff wholesome while sleeping soundly on your bed of money.

It's hard to trust the company I've grown to love. I've been through everything with this company. Loss of family, addiction, break ups, giant cross country moves, they sent me on a team member voulenteer trip. I've defended this company, I've re commended this company. It taught me healthy eating, clean living and have introduced me to the love of my life and my best friend.

But plain and simple, I don't trust them anymore.

Instead of reevaluating the clown show they have at regional level, who have mismanaged the hell out of this company, further driving it into the ground, they come after the loyal workers. The back bone of the teams. The buyers are being stabbed in the back. Marketing is being murdered. We all fought for you. We all worked our fingers to the bone for you. We trusted you.

And instead of being honest with us you give us some fluff video about how humble the company started and the great things to come while you all were mapping out how you would mow us down.

I feel lied to. I feel cheated. You are destroying the culture. You are deceiving the customer. And you are setting those of us fortunate to cling onto whatever job we can for ultimate failure.

This holiday season is going to fail miserably. You expect us to go above and beyond after we have already been exhausted? This was poorly handled, and you will surely notice it in the near future.

I hope you are proud of how you all have handled this.

I have been a loyal WFM TM since the early 2000's and I have seen a lack of common sense and a lot of incompetence, this takes the cake. I really hope John, Walter, AC and the gang are reading these comments and hearing our voices. What a terrible way to "fix" the mess you've made. We've gotten a bad rap for no good reason in so many ways, but this is only going to turn consumers off more. My heart goes out to everyone whose jobs were cut. I am puking up the Kool-Aid.

I was a team member for 3 yrs and left the company for other reasons over a year ago. It saddens me to hear what is going on because for me WFM showed different than other companies in how they cared and treated their team members. For those who feel or know their position is in jepordy start to look now. I know its not easy out there but you have to look out for yourself because in the long run companies and businesses are there for themselives. Known facts over and over

It saddens me to see all of this going on. Even though I don't work for WholeFoods just within, I'm hurt for fellow TMs. I come in everyday & I watch the store hudfles , I hear how one or two TMs put in more effort to do a three man job. I see no new hires and the TMs struggle to try to help impatient rude customers & remain humble. Of course I help where I can. I saw new pple come in work everyday they were scheduled never late never call out but not informed during store meeting that it would be there last. Just a small phone call two days later saying we appreciated your time. Oh really? I thought WFs was about its core values & it's people. I see now. & its nothing I'd think about after all the backhanded events. Stay strong family. LL SG

I worked there 5yrs because i stopped a shoplifter from stealing they said they were letting me go. it's really because I wouldn't do they little dances in front of the stores or partys I told them I was there to work. a week after my mom passed away they let me go. The Store Team leader couldn't do it she had her atls do it. She still has her job in plantation davie store cause she was sleeping with the VP of south florida he would show up with her kids at events , job security who you know , who you sleep with. She threw the Atl saps under the bus that fired me they just got laid off , it all comes around brother how's it feel Ben and Sally. And Dana you shouldn't hide in your office so much customers want to know if there is anyone running the store. I can't wait for Lucky's and trader joes to open . see if sleeping with the VP gets you anywhere.

Im going to luckys

10 years with the company. I was TM of the year 2 times in the NE region. Can't say my location due to worries of getting sued or something. I was a part of the marketing team and WFM was my life and I loved everything about it. Ever since Walter rob took over the company took a 360 into the corporate side of life. I lost my job and it's insane of how a TM that built this company could be just kicked out the door like nothing.... I never had a write up, never had anything! I raised over $220,000 for this company in community events with the years I put down in marketing. Now it's all gone and whole foods doesn't give to shits. They took my culture for the company and spit me in the trash can.

I hope everyone stays strong and hopefully we can take our passion and creativity to a company that will appriecate us. Core values should change from whole foods cause team member happiness and excellence is BULLSHIT

This post, more than any of the others, resonates with me. 8+ years with the company. They absolutely should've been more forthcoming, not let tms move to open new stores only to be laid off days later. Not allowed positions to be filled knowing full well the positions wouldn't exist in a months time. Given tms the chance to find other teams to work on instead of waiting to the last minute when other teams are hired up or in the process of hiring up for the holidays. We all could've done some rearranging to save at least some of our coworkers, our work family. I'm safe for now, but for how long?

i agree with you until "And if someone came to me and said I could make a little less money but I'd have job protection? I'd just ask where to sign." I can't afford to make any less than i do. I'm not getting full time hours despite being a long-time FT TM supervisor/buyer. it's absolute crap and i'm so completely overworked and know that with this "restructuring" all the extra workload is going to fall on my team, and we won't get paid more or get more time to do it.

10+ years, a team leader, and I feel the same. So sad to see what we have become. Even worst to see us still pretend we are something else.

Well put. I am a also a longtime TM. Multiple positions, multiple stores, multiple regions. I used to think the company was different but experiences taught otherwise. They try to give us longtime TMs the boot because we make too much money and then they can hire two part-timers to replace us. They're full of shit.
