Thread regarding Whole Foods Market Inc. layoffs

People who's pay is being cut. And other questions. Please let's work together

Midwest here. Announced today like everyone else.i have some questions, the eyes of almost every team member in my store are glued to this site looking for answers.

Here are our Questions to those already affected.

  1. How much of a pay decrease were offered? How much were you making before? ( be open please. This is anonymous and it would help people gauge the situation)

  2. If it's 1.6 % laid off, 1500 positions, how many have been so far.

  3. What roles seem safe. Higher buyers roles, tl's?

  4. We're anybody let go due to high wages? We have a team leader who has been here for too long and capped out around $30+ and he thinks he is gone soon.

Thank you. Please remember we are not some assholes on the internet starting up issues, we are people who worked for this company because at one time is treated us all well. They are the problem now, not us.

Thank you. Good luck friends.

Severance in Nor Cal is a minimum of 8 weeks for MTLs. Don't know if it's different for buyers and specialists.

  1. Buyers that don't become buyers after reapplying or step themselves down will be offered between $11 and $17/hr, depending on length of service, which is the rate range of a TM. Difference in pay from being buyer to becoming tm will be bridged by length of service severance. This is somewhat complicated to explain, but essentially if tm were to qualify for 2 weeks (80 hrs x current rate) of severance pay, then half of that amount would be used to fund the difference between old rate and new rate until cash runs out. This benefits veteran TMs, as their pot would be larger. Former and current buyers are free to apply to other stores if nearby.

  2. Don't know specific #s but any buyer on final infraction warning must take the severance package. Nobody was let go due to what they make, only forced out if on FW, which no buyer should be on anyway.

  3. Safe roles seem to be TL and ATL, along with all non buyer tm positions. STL seems to be safe, but ASTL depends on region. MTL is also depends on region.

The important thing to remember is to stay calm and not lose your head. We're all experiencing this in different regions. Share this with your fellow TMs, as I'm sure some store leaders suck at putting out fires. This primarily affects teams that were too heavy with buyers. It's not easy telling somebody that's good at their job that they may not have their current role in a few weeks, but this is the reality of retail unfortunately. Have open discussions with your store leadership and with each other. It's important not to turn this into something where regular TMs think their livelihood is on the line. I hope I don't come off as cold, I'm just trying to help.

You have to read behind the lines here - they said it would be 1.6% or 1500 AFTER people take other positions in the company (assuming they stay on board) so expect many more than the quoted number to be asked to step down, take a lower wage or find a different job in the company. See what they did there?

Interesting that they're not according to rumor, going to pay minimum wage. Will there be strikes like Walmart?
