Thread regarding Whole Foods Market Inc. layoffs

What is REALLY happening? I am a TM at WFM and after reading a ton of good and bad posts here, I would like the truth for once

Based off what I can gather, we are clearly in transition into a Whole NEW Foods. I have been a TM off and on since before 2000 and seen some crazy shit, but never this crazy. Sure we have every type of person working here in a cultural melting pot and that is part of the wonder, so is our passion for food and my time with WFM has truly been a blessing. Many people have many different feelings towards this company and I just am sitting here thinking if I have been missing the big picture all along? I grew up with this company in so many ways that if I were to tell the story, it would be a short novel...but this is where I am at in the now: I always figured that we, at WFM, are part of an experiment. ONE that tests society and then asks, how did we do? A company that wants to Satisfy and DELIGHT! Wants the store to have the power...wants the TM to have the power. A company that let's the food have a voice. You get my point...

Now I ask:

Is the experiment over?

Are we really going to be joining the Trader Joe's or Kroger's of the world because of business concepts?

Is this a beginning of a new whole foods?

Is this our death?

What does this mean 1y 5y 10 years later? I'd like to know this... my PASSION is food and I really would like a future with WFM. IF they can get their shit together I am in for the long haul. This is Corporate America after all, right?

Look at the 365 model. Those are the stores they are opening now. They are basically carbon copies of 365/trader joes/grocery stores in terms of labor. That is clearly what we are moving towards. So basically yeah -- they sold us out.

i feel the same way. is what i believed in now overtaken with trying to fit someone else's mold? why aren't we holding on to the plan!? all the ideas, hard work and dedication to move it forward--feeling confused.

Let me explain with a historical example

When I was young you went to a record store to buy music (we bought CDs, why did we still call them record stores?) A knowledgeable (lucky bastard) sales person that had forgotten more about music than you would ever know would assist you in your selection, make suggestions and ridicule your puny grasp of the music scene. You could sample an album, stand in line for concert tickets, meet bands and buy posters, t-shirts and other music memorabilia. It was a great place.

Now we download music from the internet and that space in the mall (ha! who goes to the mall anymore) has long been taken over by sleepy frozen yogurt shop or an independent insurance agent.

Record store $$$$ --> Best Buy $$$ --> Amazon $$ --> mp3 $
