Thread regarding Whole Foods Market Inc. layoffs

As far as the two month (8 weeks) period these layoffs are supposed to encompass..

Many people have taken that to mean that, while most of the layoffs are happening now/yesterday, there is a chance of more coming in the next few weeks. I don't think that's correct, and here's why.

Here is a link to a Gawker article that has a copy of the notice TM's were given that details the options they have

At the bottom of the form, it says "Please understand that you may use as much or as little of the eight week notice period as you want to make your decision and remain in your current role for that time". This seems to indicate to me that the "difficult decision to reduce a number of positions across the company over the next two months" in Mackey's email refers to the notice period that team members are being given, and not to a two month long reign of terror in which anyone may lose their job at any time.

Now, maybe that's just wishful thinking, but it seems to me that if you survive the layoffs that are happening this week, you should be ok going forward through the holidays, unless you get fired for some other reason (attendance, final warning, etc).

Thoughts?

I think this is only the first round of cuts.

Also, from the perspective of the higher ups, they know this is more terrible publicity and it is in their best interests to do everything in one fell swoop. Dragging it out would only hurt the stock price more.

Exactly. The layoffs could take up to 8 weeks because some people might decide to accept the severance next week, or in two weeks, etc. Everyone should have been notified for this round. That doesn't mean there won't be another round of lay offs at some point but the over 8 week wording is based on the options already given out.
