Thread regarding Whole Foods Market Inc. layoffs

The Honest Truth! I can tell you the honest truth, because I honestly know.

I can tell you the honest truth, because I honestly know. That is all I can say.

John Mackey's & Walter Robbs's email this morning was was written in such a misleading manner with little information on what is about to go down these upcoming weeks. In addition, your STLs are reading a script where the overall message is: not to believe everything in the media and don't spread low morale. Regions have made different decisions on some store based decisions, but here are the facts and some are just sad.

  1. 1500 jobs, maybe if they are lucky will be all that will actually leave the company. If it was actually losing their position it would be in the high thousands to 10,000 depending on your labor cuts that are also coming.

  2. All Marketing TL's in the company will be going metro. So, for some 1 person will now have to cover 4 stores. They all have to apply against each other.

  3. All PBS in the company will be going metro. So for some 1 person will cover 2 store or 3. With slightly higher pay, but the workload vs pay will make 0 sense.

  4. 2 Buyers positions from every regions will be deleted, this is at the hold of your regional leadership.(could be grocery or specialty) In the end because of further labor cuts on top of this it will truly be worse than just that.

  5. All labor will be downsized by the end of the month, so many stores and teams will lose their buyer, extra ATL and supervisors, they don't add this number into the 1500, because in one way or another they can be a regular TM with pay cuts, but it still is losing your position.

  6. Certain regions will be combining teams and eliminated a Team Lead and ATL.

  7. Regional Offices will be losing any specialist positions like HSH chef type job, etc.

  8. ASTL will be downsizing for the entire company so if your store has three it better be an insanely busy store or it will be two and then so on if you have two could become one and they all have to apply against each other for these positions.

  9. All of these positions are offered severance, 8 weeks notice, plus your PTO.

Facts to know of how little they care about you:

  1. STL's get outrageous QTR bonuses and up, some over 40k at time, none of which were affected or even up for discussion.

  2. Regional bonuses were not affected at all or even discussed. Coordinators are supposedly not that much, but EC's and up are HUGE!!

  3. They could have gotten rid of that guy working here for under a year, but they'd rather dump the higher salary long term people.

  4. Supervisors ATL's and Buyers were pitted against each other to take the focus off of how much "whole foods loves you" and make it a competition.

5.They laugh and say this isn't true when asked, it's 100% TRUE.

  1. If the company doesn't perform better, there will be more cuts.

  2. WE SET OUR OWN TARGETS TO WALL STREET. Meaning their dumb asses set them high and misses and the TM's pay for it.

  3. There have been many cuts over the year, ACCT TL's to just basic in store educators.

  4. They don't care about the customers or TM growth. If they did why take the hit directly to TM's and store level?

  5. Why not just when they opened these shit loads of stores since they knew about this for months just not rehire the position that left?????

  6. By signing that severance you cannot be hired for 6 month except CA, which of course they won't hire you they're either for some excuse they can think of because they will be flagged that you took the severance.

  7. You also cannot sue or take unemployment if you take severance.

  8. Doesn't that random Union Awareness Training (AKA Anti-Union Training) a month ago seem sort of obvious to why it was done?

  9. The higher up didn't lose sleep over this. In fact they are milking the cow, and likely will reap further benefits including giant bonuses and stock options.

And for what was all of this done you may ask???

To lower prices in certain departments. Yep, remember that matching of Trader Joes campaign and those 40 million dollars in ads they found a way to cut labor to spend? That worked for like a month and then failed. TM's now are paying for what the top made mistakes doing.

If it smells like a bag of shit, looks like a bag of shit, it's probably because it is a bag of shit! Our truly dedicated Team Members have been so brainwashed. They blindly are accepting everything without any legal advice or true guidance from Whole Foods. The less you know the more power they have. Just remember when you are a big-boy-company traded on Wall Street and funded by HUGE banks (like Goldman Sachs), you will eventually be a capitalistic monster! Conscious Capitalism my ass- John Mackey. The Unions at least would have protected you not thrown you out with the garbage.

I think this well written post should make it to the media! It is very well written, and states what I believe to be facts.

none of this would continue to happen if people said the lost word NO. don't follow orders. if the people from the top would do this then it will be a big deal as it would spread downward.

Yup totally agree, The food customers are purchasing at the salad bar or cold case are hardly fresh. They are more like 5-6 days old just made to look "fresh". I've also got a bunch of photos of the filth that the prep foods dept use to make product. I'm sure if the customers saw what really goes on behind the scenes they would spend their hard earned cash somewhere else. Not to mention how 90% of the time the place isn't kept clean until health inspectors step into the store. Then its a mad dash to clean up and replace old food labels with fake new ones. Not to mention our ATL/TL STL at the WFM LAT in northern california would purposely hide spoiled food outside in carts just so inspectors wouldn't see them on the shelves.

This place is such a joke...if they cared about TM's they would legitimately stop cutting Labor to satisfy the bottom line. Here is a concept WFM...don't be beholden to your shareholders and start listening to your stakeholders. Employees could walk out of every store(and I think they should), to help WFM quickly see that they make nothing without all of their TM's. It has been obvious for years that this company over shot it's goals, and I knew from about 6 months in that the stores and the lack of on the job training provided would crumble onto themselves. This sad result, the layoffs, are what happens when you don't focus on the core of your business and build a foundation. WFM stopped caring about their company years ago...it's only now being seriously felt.

You can eventually get unemployment even if you take severance. Your severance is taken into account when figuring unemployment benefits, so no, you can't double dip. When your severance term runs out then you can start pulling the unemployment benefits. Several regions have stated in their packet that they won't contest unemployment.

How is this fear mongering? Even the ASTLs in my metro talk about what the OP posted like it's common knowledge. It's the direction the company is going.

And yet there were looks of surprise when I quickly and confidently checked the box for option one in my meeting today.

With the exception of being eligible for unemployment if you opt for severance. May vary from region to region. In NW the company is not fighting any unemployment claims from this round of layoffs.

ASTLs are getting axed. My store had just hired a new store associate around July and saw him walk out. He was by far the most appreciative and kindhearted manager I ever had. Most STLs have sold their soul to the devil, why does it seem impossible for it to happen at a store that has crazy sales? We only do 400-450k a week and we lost one.

Nobody gets a bonus for axing people, you are getting a bonus because of your position and performance. If you ax an ASTL, everything else being equal, the savings - that's all pure profit for the store, so your financial performance is better, that's how you get the bonus.

This is the truth. Disaster capitalism with no conscience. America is run by psychopaths, not just WFM. In a year there will be no difference between QFM and Walmart.

SW TMS here, I agree with you 100%. Whole Foods should be Unionized because this could have been prevented. Even TOM BRADY needed a union to defend him, why not us!?!?! If we can learn something out of this, Unionize our TMs. They deserve so much more than this. How long are we going to allow this to happen until we react?
